Slow shutter speed photography question

Ive seen those pictures where you see ray of lights around people.. or something written (or letters) using light... I'm wondering what kind of light is the best for this type of photography?

Do people mostly use some sort of a glowstick?

Also how would you normally expose for a photography such as this which involves some people who are entirely lit up by the glowstick (hardly any other light in the picture)?

light painting ?

I have only briefly tried it. you have to experiment but usually a long exposure at night results in the glow stick (or flashlight, sparkler, etc.) being only visible

Try YouTube, there are loads of video clips showing how to do it.
