What are some pros n cons of Alien bees vs these bare bulbs?
I have been reading on Ab but this is new to me.

Aside from power similarities and range, they are two different approaches to building strobes.
The AB is intended for indoor, studio situations requiring AC mains power. And they have modeling lights and its expected that one will modify the light with add-on reflectors.

The AD/CL is intended as a portable strobe using battery power. It also permits using modifiers although not the range or ease of mounting.

AD/CL power range dips well into the speedlite area, while the 360 approaches the output of an AB 800. ABs on the other had are available with more than twice the power of an AD/CL-360

AB uses voltage controlled power adjustment which means longer flash duration as power is reduced. AD/CL uses IGBT power control which means shorter flash duration as power is reduced.

The ABs can be used, with appropriate triggers, to fire above x-sync using the flash tail as the light source through out the shutter travel. AD/CL has an H mode that uses rapid flash pulsing to create a reasonably constant light source for the duration of shutter travel. Both approach achieve an image but there is a gross illumination penalty.

Was that previous night test done with a CL180 or CL360?

Now that the v850 are on preorder, I wonder if getting 3 of those would be preferable to the 360.

Can you fire the v850 with other triggers?

Any trigger that has a hot shoe or a cable port. Since its manual only that would be just about anything available.

This is a speedlite output unit. Getting 3 of them gives you some options about placement but the power would be less than from one 360.

I consider it as the little brother to the 180 which is the little brother to the 360.

If we generously say the v580 has about 75Ws of useful output, that makes it half the 180 which is half the 360 in output. That creates a nice progression with shared triggering. All with H mode and remote power control.

I'm looking forward to getting one to evaluate.

Dave, when playing around with the 360, I find it to have similar output at 1/4 +.7 as my 600ex. This is with the 600ex set at 24mm and full power. So I bet you that it feels more like having 3 600ex.

With 3 -4 speedlites, I think you can potentially mount them together is a way that spreads the light and thereby giving you a somewhat softer light (with some specularity) without using a special modifier.

Josh,
There are so many variables to a test between different flash sources. Reflector, angle of view, reflective surfaces, etc.

I've never found a reliable method to test but then again, I'm not a professional evaluator, just a guy using lights to make pictures. :-)

1/4 +.7 compared to a 360 would be 150 -.3 or about 100 Ws. That's a lot of output for a 600EX-RT.
