Thanks, i had a feeling it was a bit different than a phone or laptop.

What about leaving the controller on top of the battery (or taking it off) while charging? Does that matter?

The charging works either attached or detached from the (top) control unit.

And yes, always have a spare unit as a backup just in case one fails.

Can you charge a battery without the top part attached?

Yes you can. I have two battery packs and a spare battery. You do not need the top part attached to charge the actual battery.

The first few times I charged the batteries I took them off the controller. After a while I started wondering why I was doing that and stopped.

For you all that are new to the 360 and this thread, a couple of the smart guys suggested that this type battery should be monitored while charging. It's lithium polymer and can swell and catch fire.

....lithium polymer are in the majority of devices that can be charged these days. From phone up to a air plane and because they can store a lot of energy they can dangerous if not handled correctly so they are made foolproof by having a protection circuit for that. You have to drive literally a nail through the pack to have it become dangerous.

When you are charging devices you should always keep an eye on them and every lithium ion/polymer have an overcharging protection and as long that is not harmed it will stop charging when the battery is full. In the case of your 360 charger the light will turn green and further charging is stopped.

Here you can see the board that is in every battery pack for this flash and the white item at the end of the two white cables is a temperature switch that protects if the pack gets to hot during probably discharging or charging it wrongly:

I use human power to transport and lift them into the back of the car. If the shoot is outside and we have to make a long walk, I have a little beach buggy to get them to the shoot location. ;-)a

So I've only used one of mine so far... as I was putting both into my 450aw bag to see how I want to work it out the other one that I haven't used the battery pack clip broke in half... the clip part just broke off. I'll contact adorama to see if they can ship me a new clip, I'm sure they'll take care of it as they forgot to ship my spare battery when I bought the combo pack and Helen shipped it out right away. So far I'm liking Adorama's service but wanted to share with ya'll the clip breaking for no reason. Must of been a fluke.

Very nice idea!

I'd go this route too but want to fit the speedlight adapters and a few grids/gels etc. I need to get some smaller more portable boxes maybe something like the 24" cheetah box so that way I can get really portable in my setup.

Yes, I saw your buggy ideal... I'll' be stealing this :) Well, I actually have one of the folding wagons and think that'll handle all my on location needs (I'm urbanscape hehe)

European-made Outdoor cases Type 66 (external link) (hard shell roller case). The reflectors have hard foam rings on the necks to prevent scratching the interior of the reflector they are stored inside. Hard foam rings available from hair salons, etc. for those people who are lucky enough to still have hair they can gather into a bun on the back of their head (ps. Not that I would want to actually do that even if I wasn't already a bald old man  ). Lid organiser is a spare Peli 1510 from my store cupboard, just leaving enough room above for the AD-S7 multi-function doo-dad. A Godox / Cheetah white umbrella lies across the top of the v860C in normal use ........ and the VALs are self-propelled and self-fuelled where necessary.

Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!
