Lets say I want to gel it. Can I roll a piece of gel and put it over the flash tube ?

Time to dust this thread off:

I wanted to mention that the Chimera 2705 Lumedyne/Norman/Quantum speed ring works very well with the CL-180 (and 360). I was able to snag a used one on eBay a few days ago.

The insert in the 2705 fits the throat of the CL-180 snuggly but comfortably and is very strong. It also has a slightly dished contour to it. The outer portion of the speed ring is plastic and accommodates four softbox rods. It's not for octas. On the plus side, it is very light in weight and has an embedded 1/4-20 socket on one side allowing the ring to be stand mounted. This is a critical feature as the accessory mount and head joint of the 180/360 flash units should not be asked to support the weight of a softbox.

Here's a 360 hanging off the back of the Chimera speed ring with a 24" x 32" Photoflex softbox on board:

IMAGE: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8535/8809780131_b3af39e647_o.jpg

A closer look shows the flash attached to the speed ring insert and the speed ring itself attached to a hefty ballhead:

IMAGE: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8128/8820367122_8be3106eb7_o.jpg

Without the softbox:

IMAGE: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8122/8809780095_6a62b79002_o.jpg

If you're wondering, that's a 2" long 5/16" bolt stuck in the umbrella hole in the above image. It passes through and is clamped in the 360's umbrella mounting tube. It's there as a precaution to ensure the flash doesn't fall off the back of the speed ring (a very unlikely possibility).

The contour of the insert can be seen once it's removed from the plastic outer ring:

With an appropriately located 3/8" hole drilled in it, the insert functions well as a super wide angle umbrella reflector:

The insert measures 144mm in diameter so it should be compatible with any speed ring that takes inserts of this size.

Looks great!

I've decided to hold off on these, until this wedding season is over. I don't want to switch/learn something new mid-season. Once November hits, i'll pick one up and test it out.

Looks extremely promising though.

Why wait? They are easy units to use. I've been shooting weddings with three of the 180's for a few months now and absolutely love them.

I'd dearly love to be wrong - but I think that link is to a distributor and not a direct reseller. IF those are the recommended prices for retail, they are very very interesting. However, the login seems to be for dealers not the general public.

Please, please can I be wrong. (Yet again )

Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

This is great Dave. I'm going to eventually make up a custom mount via the threaded hole on the side of the flash head.

Phil, I'm certain those are dealer prices but I was surprised to see that they are inclusive of VAT. That seems odd to me. Do resellers get charged VAT on business-to-business transactions with their suppliers with a second VAT hit applied at the time of retail sale?

EDIT: Actually, now that I look at that page again, it says "Login for prices". Hmmm. So, then, what are the prices appearing on the page? Those can't be retail prices (if they are, I suspect someone's going to be getting a call from Godox).

You buy with VAT. You sell with VAT. You report the incoming and outgoing VAT. You pay the difference. So the supplier only pays the VAT for the price incerase.

I've thought about that possibility, Elv. However, you're the expert machinist. I'll leave that to you ;)
