Found this guy today rooting around some brush. Didn't seem to mind too much that I was photographing him. I've never seen one alive before so it was a neat experience. They're bigger than I originally thought.

Thanks! I'll be back to check on him for sure. Yeah the sun kept going in and out from behind clouds. Was tough getting the exposure right. The AV setting on my 7d seems to really underexpose so I shoot manual all the time.

I think he was giving me the stink eye in the second picture.

He's very relaxed in both shots so I doubt he's giving you the stink eye. If he was giving you the stink eye you'd see the quills flared out on his back. When they're afraid or alarmed, they can make the quills stand pretty near straight out from their back. Without anything to give reference to the size of this prickly critter it's hard to tell just how big it might be but they do, indeed, get rather large. They're especially fond of things that have salt in or on them. Axe handles, outhouse seats, hoe handles, and so on.

Very nice captures.

Thanks for the info JustKev. I did some more reading today and tried to find him again. I put some snow shoes on this time as it's pretty deep in that area. I found lots of single droppings of poop but could not locate where his den is. I will try again another day. I also read that in the winter they only venture about 100m from where their den is.
