What's your budget, and what's your location?
What do you want to photograph?

Lots of choices.

Canon T4i (or the t2i or t3i)
Nikon D3200

Both can be had for around 600 dollars. You then could use the 100 bucks for a 50mm 1.8.

Good luck and welcome to the forums.

T2i or T3i or T4i plus couple lens: 18-55, 55-250: good starting kit with $700. For staying low with budget but still get good functionality, T2i is the best among 3.

Or 60D plus one lens, such as a 18-55: good body but not enough budget for lens.

Or 40D plus 18-135: balanced approach. Limited MP.

Hope this helps. I have just gone through this process.

You did not mention the make of your old film camera. For example, if it a Canon EOS SLR, the lens(es) will work with your new digital camera. You may change lenses over time, but at least you have something to start with.

Furthermore, you can trade in your old body for a refurb T3i, T4i or 60D at a discounted price with the Canon Loyalty Program - the phone number for the CLP is 1 (866) 443-8002. I should mention that the CLP is only for the USA. I got my 60D through the CLP and very happy with it.

I may be wrong but I believe it it s 20% discount on the refurb price at the Canon store:

If your lens are EF or EF-S, they can be used on all Txi (like T2i etc.) and xxD (like 60D, etc.)

If your lens are EF or EF-S, they can be used on all Txi (like T2i etc.) and xxD (like 60D, etc.)

Canon used to have 3 sensor sizes which have now been cut to 2: A) 35mm film "Full Frame" (FF) 24mmX36mm. This would be the 1DX, 5D I, 5D II, 5D III and 6D; and B) "1.6 Crop" which is approx. 62.5% the size of FF. This would be the T1i, T2i, T3i, T4i, 40D, 50D, 60D, 7D and all previous iterations thereof. So, if you buy at T4i or a 60D, your old EF 50mm lens will 'behave' more like an 80 mm lens on your old camera because the image taken by the camera will be a 'Crop' taken from a FF sensor with the same lens. The focal length, aperture and shutter speed all remain the same. A photo taken with a 50 mm lens on a 1.6 Crop camera will 'look' like it was taken with an 80 mm lens. The term that you will see is "35mm Equivalence". Thus the 50mm lens on the Crop camera has an "Equivalent" FL of 80mm.

I hope that I have not confused you and someone will be along to correct my explanation I'm sure. Good luck with your purchase!

Yogi

I would say if used, can go for a t2i/t3i for cheap off of craigslist or something, you can find them for something like 400ish sometimes, but if buying new, the t4i has significant upgrades over the other two, such as a better autofocus and (if that matters) a touchscreen lcd.
