I can't be the only one! ;)

I had a xsi for years before I got out of the auto zones. I have recently upgraded to the 60d and have been exploring different aspects of photography. So really, I am a newbie when it comes to taking photographs as opposed to snapshots. The problem is that I am bouncing all over the place taking different kinds of photos...macro, sports, landscapes, portraits, etc. Gah...at this rate I am going to be a "Jack (or I guess Jill) of all trades but master of none" at least in respects to photography.

I guess maybe as I explore more my "preferred" type of photography will emerge. Any other newbies like this? Any of you pros start of this way?

I was kinda like that. Snapping everything the first several months with my DSLR. My 50D was my first ever DSLR after upgrading from a 5mp Fujifilm advanced p&s of its time. I got it when I graduated high school and I was class of 2006 and got my first DSLR for Christmas in 2009. I would take snap shots of anything, but serious pictures didnt start coming until after I learned my camera, learned editing, and trained my eye a little better. My thirst for snapping only increased as I learned the principles and wanted to apply them as soon as I read about them. Now I have a little more of a handle on what I'm doing.

I'm not an expert, but I do know the two niches I fit into. Aviation and wildlife. People? Forget it. My family and close friends, yeah, but strangers? No. I'm not a people person enough to want to open a portrait business to the general public. I found what I was comfortable shooting and enjoyed and stuck with it. I don't get out much to shoot any more (babies change things lol), so I still have a lot to learn. Book learning only takes you so far in this hobby. Getting out and doing it is the best way to learn.

Its the luxery of digital, you don't need every shot to count. When i shot film, I had 24 or 36 shots on a roll, that I paid for, and that I had to pay to get developed. the developer charged me the same for good or bad shots.

Bouncing all over the place is a good thing. Don't stop. Do it more!

I plan on continuing. I owned a film rebel and I used to put film through that thing like nobody's business. When I upgraded to digital I thought I'd be shooting all the time but I got very frustrated with not getting the shots I wanted. It seemed that I took such better photos with my film camera. I was shooting action shots with film and thought action shots with digital would be the same. Well, in thinking back...I think the timing was when we went from boating and all the tubing/wakeboarding/skiing shots to when we went indoors to basketball shots. I was too busy with kids to take the time to learn what was needed.

Now I have more time and am learning and having fun doing so. Yesterday I shot a cold sunset here in Michigan. Today I had a photoshoot for a ceramic figure we have here to practice portrait lighting. It all helps me learn. :)

Here was my model for today. lol

Thanks, Mark.

My goal is to use a live model next but my 16yo ds isn't thrilled when I enlist him. ;)
