I wonder if the mods could add something to the general instructions about posting photos in this forum that would explain to people how to resize their photos without stripping their EXIF data?

Obviously, it would be a choice, but I bet a lot of people (like me, until recently) do not realize that some ways of saving (for example, "Save for Web" in Elements) will automatically strip EXIF data, while others (for example, resizing the image and then saving as a lower quality JPEG) will leave the EXIF data intact.

Given that this is a photo sharing community, I think most people would want to leave the EXIF data intact if they knew how (and would want to avoid stripping interesting information from their photos).

(Might want to include something about how to get an EXIF viewer, too.)

Just a suggestion. Thanks.

agreed.

i just searched the forum and this post was the most/best information on the first page of the search results.

ozzie, you seem to know the basics, maybe you could edit you post and have it included in a "useful links" sticky post?

:P

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I actually had a bit of trouble getting things to work on my Mac, which is why I thought it would be good to have some sort of comprehensive guide from a moderator. Also, I thought if this were ADDED to the current instructions for posting photos (the guidelines from the moderators), it would be efficient, "official," and helpful (especially for new members). Apparently you are the only one who agrees! ;)

I originally thought this was a "choice" but... On Flickr people are consciously choosing to hide EXIF info...easily done. Well then, are they hiding trade secrets?

To the amateurs who don't know how to accomplish those types of photos then yes, they are hiding well known "secrets" from them. I can look at a photo and get a good ballpark estimate on if it was a wide or closed aperture. The rest I could figure out myself depending on the lighting in my location.
