I'd like to get a consensus on what users here have as far as accurate iOS weather apps for planning a trip a few days in advance. I'm most interested in clouds, but not a complete blanket of clouds, on and off. Any weather apps more accurate on this than others?

Thanks

Tony

I use a combo of apps.

WeatherBug for general weather
Radarscope for in-depth research and the most accurate data available.
Lightning Finder for lightning chasing.

I find the most accurate weather to be the localized forecasts on the National Weather Service's website. Just type in the specific area and you'll get a detailed report.

http://www.weather.gov/forecastmaps (external link)

The important thing to remember about weather forecasts is that reliability greatly decreases once you get past 48-72 hours, to the point that a 5 or 7 day forecast is more or less just a WAG with only a 30% chance of verifying. So as long as you temper our expectations with this fact, you'll be fine.

Hope this helps,
Bryan

I can't believe I saw weather app and accurate in the same sentence. :):) But why not go to the source, the NOAA database and satellite photos? They are the ones all other weather predictors are using.

There is a ton of info free for your use including their predictions, radar images, satellite images and such. All they are missing is Wanda the weather bunny reading the site for you and re-drawing their maps in crayon and little stickers of clouds and suns and such.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I don't believe anything but NOAA, the National Weather Service, or the SPC. RadarScope is my preferred radar app, and I have been know to obsess over tornadic systems even when they are a thousand miles away.

Todd, how accurate is Lightning Finder?

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."

Yes, RadarScope is awesome. 8-)

I've had decent success with Lightning Finder, but it's hard to quantify how accurate it really is. I do like the app though, when I'm trying to find the "hotzone" for a front coming in. However, it's not like there is a wild assortment of lightning apps. Of the ones I tried, this works okay for my needs.

I don't know what's available for iOS but on my 'droid I use https://play.google.com …naviguide.radar_now&hl=en (external link) and have been very happy with it.

RadarNow! provides National Weather Service (NWS) Enhanced Radar "Base" (N0R) images from the NOAA WSR-88D NEXRAD Radar sites located around the US. Radar images are downloaded directly from NWS servers so are always the most current available. When you start the app, the radar images are from the site closest to your location.

In addition to current radar it notifies me when NWS alerts are issued in my area.

I heard of it from Reed Timmer. I figured if it was good enough for him, it's good enough for me! I'm actually wanting to chase some this year. I can now drive, so maybe I can at least drive 50 miles to intercept a thunderstorm. I'm in WV, so not all that many tornadoes, kinda unfortunately.

I'm a lightning photographer as well; ever heard of strike star dot com? I'm not sure it's all that accurate, though. Does the one you use show CG's only, or CC as well?
