Those are some really nice shots!!!
What kind of a lens do you use for that?
The answer will surprise you! Here is my setup:

Canon Rebel T2i, 580EX II flash, and an 18-55 IS kit lens, mounted
Backwards!I have a special adapter ring that costs around $5 or so on eBay, which attaches to the filter ring, and has an EF mount on the other end. When I mount the lens backwards, it will turn it into an extremely high powered macro lens that will put even the 100L to shame!

Here is a comparison between the 100L at it's maximum magnification, versus the reversed 18-55. these are grains of salt on a tablecloth. I might not have quite done the greatest job with these shots, but you can see the magnification difference.

The snowflakes are on a mirror, which helps to backlight the snowflakes some. It was cold enough that I could take the mirror outside to get snowflakes, and then bring it into the garage, so I didn't get my camera wet while shooting.
