Anyone remember the price of a 40D?

Hi, just out of curiosity, does anyone know what a 40D body went for new? I listed my 1D MK 3 on Craig's list for $1400, and said I might consider a partial trade for another body as the !D is my only body and still want a camera. Someone replied that they would give me there used 40D and $200, LOL, I know you can buy a 40D for $400 all day long, so I am not going to sell him my 1D for the equivalent of $600. Or he thinks his used 40D is worth a grand.
So, I was just wondering what they were new, so when I right him back, I can say I am not giving you (blank) more dollars for your 40D than it was when it was new.

Dpreview says US list was $1299.

Yep, $1,300. And I remember when the 40D came out. I had to have it!

It's hard to believe that the 1D MIII is that cheap now. Crazy...

I paid CAN $1699 with a kit lens.

$1200 is usually where the xxD camera slots in. I think thats what I paid for a 30D back in the day. Last brand new camera I ever bought, learned my lesson then about how much money you can save buying used.

Maybe in the US the RRP has some meaning, but in the UK it is a grossly overinflated joke, which retailers use to try to milk the maximum cash they can from the impatient public. For the launch the RRP was £900 in the UK. The price soon dropped though, as it always does, for those with a little patience.

I bought mine in September 2007 for £750 from a UK high street retailer (Jessops), which illustrates the redundancy of the RRP. There was a £50 Canon cash back at the time, taking the price down to £700. With further cash back from a cash back shopping site (ordered online for collection in store) I think my net bill was £680 or so.

Take off UK VAT of 17.5% to get the tax free price and that's £579. At that time the exchange rate was pretty much 1 GBP = 2 USD, making $1160 or thereabouts.

Please note this is likely a scam. I've had similar calls off of various Craigslist ads for photo gear and they try to get unsuspecting sellers to trade for POS equipment at inflated prices so they can flip your better equipment. Since its a trade and an agreement they're not technically doing anything illegal.

Same, 40D - 17-85 kit about 3 weeks on the market in Vancouver.

Brand new, I paid around $800 for my 40D.
