Just bought a Samsung 840 250mb SSD to fit into my Dell xps8500 , not sure now if I should have bought the pro version with double the write speed??

Will the model I've bought still be fine for photo/video editing or should I have gone for the better write speed of the pro drive?

The non-pro uses a new and unproven technology for packing more data in less space. That keeps the cost down, but its potentially less reliable and and course the write speeds are lower. I'm going with the 840 Pro when I upgrade.

Any SSD is fast. It doesn't really matter which one you get, honestly, unless you are trying to win benchmarks instead of just using your computer. If you've already bought one, stop worrying and just enjoy it.

Any SSD will be faster than the fastest HDD. With that being said your computer will read more often than actually write.

I like the 840 because it offers double the capacity at nearly the same read speed as the 840 Pro

Enjoy the SSD. It's Mich faster then any HDD. I went with a SanDisk Extreme which was slower then the Samsung but uses less power. Much faster then a 10K RPM drive and I get an extra 30mins out of my laptop. Enjoy the performance difference.

I bought the pro, but I got a killer deal ($200 for 250gb), youll love it regardless as long as its an SSD you likely wont tell a huge difference!

It depends if you are just using it as a drive that stores your Operating System and Programs, or a drive that you will actually be working from and accessing frequently (aka moving photos on and off the drive). If you are just using it as a boot drive/program storage...the non-pro will be just fine. However, if you will be working directly from the drive...if you can spare the extra money for the Pro it certainly wouldn't hurt since we Write speed is much faster. The 840 Pro is a very highly regarded SSD, and the non-Pro is still unproven as such.

With that said, most people will agree that if it is your first SSD ever, and you stick with the non-Pro, you will still think it's amazingly fast and not even consider upgrading the Pro version.

Like zohar0 above, I too purchased the 256GB Pro version last week from Newegg at $199.99 with Free Shipping (and no tax).

Do you recommend storing and working off photos from the drive? I use it now for only software and OS.

I didn't realize you could use it to put photos on there, I could just see issues arrising from lightroom from moving on/off.

No, I wouldn't use the SSD to store actual image files on, leave those on a regular HDD. However, with Lightroom, you can store your cache/1:1 previews and stuff on the SSD for quicker access. Not entirely necessary, just helpful if you want absolute best performance from Lightroom (especially since LR4 can be quite slow for some folks).

Here are some tips that can help speed up LR4: http://digital-photography-school.com …thout-additional-hardware (external link)
