In the dankest of facilities, cramped and crowded, horrible lighting, and no good vantage points, the season begins in our house.

Nice pics..can I ask your EXIF data? Are you using a 1DX? Did you denoise them at all? #3 looks a bit noisy.

About the only thing I did was apply a preset with clarity, highlights, and sharpness adjustments in LR, crop and then convert from Raw to jpeg during export. Didn't have much time to tweak last night. I agree, #3 is noisier than I'd like. That player was in a shadow in the back of that court.

Exif:
1. ISO 8000, 1/640, f2.8
2. ISO 8000, 1/1000, f2.5
3. ISO 8000, 1/800, f2.5
4. ISO 8000, 1/800, f2.5
5. ISO 8000, 1/500, f2.5

All shot with 1DX. Lens was 135 f2 except for 1 which was the 16-35 f2.8.

regardless, your pics look great, i especially enjoy the perspective on the first one

Always do right, this will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

The 7d may have a chance if you slowed down the shutter speed. 1/640 to 1/1000 is fast. Was there anyway you could have dropped the shutter speed to around 1/320 or 1/400 to stop motion or was it just way to dark?

If he wants to stop the motion you would increase the shutter speed not drop it any shots would be really blurry due to movement.

I realize that. You can stop motion depending on light and lens down to 1/200th in some gyms Do it all the time with my 70-200 2.8 My question was if he could still stop motion at 1/320th.. If so he could have also dropped his ISO down from 8000.

I play club, so I know first hand how hard it is to get shots to turn out. Love the action in these, you did fantastic! Good luck to your daughter this season!

My daughter plays club - first scrimmage this weekend and first tourney weeks later. I feel your pain with some of the venues BUT I think these are nice. I like number two and five a lot - I'd be more than pleased with them.

Volleyball at the level of these girls is lightning fast. A shutter speed lower than 1/640 will result in blurred arms, hands and balls at best. To avoid a blurry ball and hands, I like to try to stay at 1/1000 if I can. A little hand and ball blur is not always bad though.

I went back and looked at the original of #3 again in light of the noise comments. That image is heavily cropped, so the visible noise is primarily due to the enlargement of the image.

Not only is the lighting in these club venues typically really bad, but the facilities themselves are ugly. It's really hard to get a clean background and to isolate the subject. But, to me it's about creating memories for our family, so you get what you get.

Thanks to everyone for commenting. My girl is #4, the middle blocker. Between club and her school team, she's having a great year. She was named varsity rookie of the year in her school district after the school season ended which was a pretty exciting acknowledgement for her.

800 to 1000ss and f1.8 to 2.0 and ISOs of 3200 plus are the minimum these days. 7D can hold its own depends on the gym. I shot my 7D for 4 years inside.

I find 1.8 and 2.0 a little too shallow. Prefer to be at 2.2 to 3.2.
