I'm sure there have been a couple of threads that mention this lens but nothing has been posted up as far as I can find that directly discuss this lens. I'm interested because of the OS and the focal length. The variable aperture is a downside but its limited at F4 which isn't too shabby considering that the Canon 24-105 L is a fixed F4. APS-C sensors only. I'm excited for the same build quality as my 35 1.4 which is a beautiful lens that takes amazing quality pictures. The sample shots from sigma's website look super sharp.

Due out this week and priced at $499.

Any thoughts?

I'll have to wait and see what the optics are like. It would have to be markedly better considering you can get the current 17-70 f2.8-4 OS HSM for $350-375 new and the old original 17-70 for ~$200 used.

I wish they would have taken this opportunity to go 15-70 so I could have some competition for the 15-85. I really need 24mm equiv to keep me from wanting a dedicated UWA.

Why do you expect a Contemporary (meaning - hobbyist) Sigma lens to have the same build quality as their flagship Art line of lenses (35mm f1.4)?

Have the optics been redesigned at all? I love my 17-70 OS but Im curious if they redesigned the optics to make the new one shaper at all, cause honestly the current 17-70, while ok, is not great wide open. Also that focus ring looks tiny!

Both use FLD and SLD glass, I would imagine that the optics are going to be of similar quality. They also used the same testing on all of their lenses using their foveon sensors to check quality control and distortion. The charts seem pretty decent on their webpage.

Why do you equate Contemporary with hobbyist, and Art with flagship? That's not the perception that their literature gives me.
