I was wondering if any remotes work the video on the 7d or is it just for taking photos. The ones I have found seem to only take photos. Thanks for any help.

Using Magic Lantern, you can assign video record/stop to a half press of the shutter - which means, you can use something like an RF-602 inexpensive radio trigger to start/stop recording.

Works great.

I don't think you can do this without using ML.

The RC-6 IR remote can both start/stop video and trigger still photos.

Good to know, thanks.

Ooh, I have one of those, I'll give it a try...

I will have a look at that one. Thanks.
Are there any that are radio signal that will run the video? I like this one (external link) but it doesn't say it will triger the video.

I just tried my RC-5, and if the camera is in live view mode, pressing the IR button does indeed start/stop video if you put the camera into timer drive mode.

Of course, it's pretty much useless unless you are directly in front of and not more than 10 feet from the camera (which is why I don't use it) but at least it does work in some circumstances. If this is the case, I should try the RF-602 in a similar config - if that works, then it's a really good inexpensive radio solution to start/stop the camera. Edit: it doesn't work, it only triggers the shutter release.

When shooting video with the RC-6 does the camera have to be set in live view? I was thinking live view times out in 30 seconds or so on the 7d.

Yes, otherwise it just trips the shutter.

No, the 7D doesn't have to be in live view to shoot video. Rather, it can't. Live view and video modes are mutually exclusive on the 7D. This is different from some other Canon cameras, like the 5D Mark II, which implements video as a part of live view. But for the 7D, it's a separate mode. It uses the display on the back as a viewfinder, just like live view, though.

Well I just ordered the RC-6 and the Vello FreeWave Plus Wireless Remote Shutter Release - 2.4GHz (for Canon). I got the freewave plus because it will be a lot nicer for take photos. I will use the RC-6 for video only. Thanks for all your help and input.
