PS CS4 cropping question (how do I make everything go dark around it?)

Hi guys,

For the longest time my PS CS4 was set up so that when I selected an area I wanted to crop, it remained the regular brightness, while everything around it (the parts I wanted to get rid of it) got significantly darker, but still visible...I accidentally must have changed some settings because now it doesn't do that anymore (now it just shows the square of where I want to crop, but everything on both sides of the square is uniformly bright). How do I go back to it darkening the parts I don't want to keep?

Thanks,
T

When using the crop tool, there should be a check box called "shield" and an opacity field. Tick the former and set the latter.

BOOM! You, sir, win the internet for today. Thank you! :) I must have accidentally unchecked that box one day while pretending I was editing (but really just clicking away like a monkey).

No problem. It would indeed be rather easy to accidentally bump.

Isn't it funny how much we don't know, and then we learn!

And the cool thing is that once we learn things, we become "Experts" who can help others! I'm not saying that "facetiously" either, I mean that is a very cool thing about a forum like this!!

Very true! I've passed along tons of info (both on here and in "real life") that I have learned here!
