If everything is true then IQ could be very nice indeed. I wonder how much it will be?

Stupid me just bot a Sigma 30mm 1.4 in December 2012. If I knew the new one was coming, I would have waited.

Anyway, I have no idea how the full time manual override supposed to work on this original Sigma 30mm 1.4.

With the lens switch on AF, and without half pressing the shutter button, I can turn the focus ring to change focus without problem.

If the shutter button is half pressed and turning the manual focus ring at the same time, my camera, a Canon T3i, will keep on auto focusing back to where it was. Am I doing something wrong ? Or this is how the Sigma lens works ?

Edit: Never mind. My camera was set on Al Servo. It works when set to one shot mode.

Here you go!

I was working on a promotional video for Sigma and the producer told me last month that a 30mm was the next Art. I was quite meh at the time, even asking if he was not mistaking but he confirmed it. I now think it was logical. They probably worked on both the 35 and 30mm together, using similar solutions.

It's small!

That is perfectly normal for any lens with FTM. The camera picks a spot to focus on, if you tweak the focus while still telling the camera to focus by half-pressing the shutter button, its just going to try and refocus on the same spot. Why? Because it doesn't care that you want focus somewhere else, it has picked out that particular spot as the best place to focus and will try its darndest to focus there. Why are you keeping the shutter button half pressed anyway?

A solution is to use back button AF, so pressing the shutter button won't cause the camera to try and AF after you tweak the focus.

Even though I love sigma stuff i'm kind of meh towards it. I like the 35mm more, and I don't plan on buying full frame for a long time. However I can see a use for this lens. Though I think a telephoto in the Art series would have been better.

no plans for full frame, i don't see any reason why you would want the 35mm over the 30mm...unless you just like to spend money...

no plans for now. I will when I have more cash to do so. Also I like the FOV of 35 more than I do 30. I know its not a huge difference but I like it better.

Interesting it only comes in Canon, Nikon and Sigma. Seems the other DSLR mounts are losing a lot of third=party lens support the past couple years.

MFD has been greatly improved. 1:6 mag vs 1:10 on the old one.

Realistically, when are we likely to see this lens released? I need a lens in this general focal range by April and was deciding between the S35 and 35L but this has me interested..

Hmm, so I've been on the hunt the past week or so for new gear with my 60D and I've seen the old(er) sigma 30mm f/1.4 ex dc running for around $439.99 at BH and Adorama. My big question is it worth it to wait for this Art edition 30mm to come down in price and get a different lens, or just pull the trigger on the 30mm ex dc? I'm assuming that this new lens will have superior optics, but is it worth it for a crop shooter like myself?

If you have the focus setting on AI Servo or AI Focus then as soon as you half press the shutter the camera will still try to keep adjusting focus since it expects the object to keep moving. Therefore if you try manually focus the camera will override this and try and refocus on the object.
You need to switch your focus mode to ONE SHOT. Then if you half press camera will focus only once.. then you can refocus manually without a problem.

I don't know when, but it is already available for pre-order at B&H:

Even though the new lens seems to be nice, I don't see much point in this kind of lens. In any case, it doesn't suite my style of shooting at all. 30mm f1.4 doesn't produce much background blur (unless yo do macro), and FL is a bit too short for portraits. For non-portrait needs, I'd rather use a fast zoom - more flexibility, and because even at f1.4 background is not blurred too much, it looks more like a photographer's mistake than something done on purpose. For me, either the blur is very obvious, or it shouldn't be there at all. So I'd rather have a zoom, and stop it down, and use additional light or tripod if too dark.

If Sigma is that serious about producing professional grade lenses for croppers (something Canon isn't interested to pursue), I'd request something like 50mm f1.2 for a crop - it must be easier and cheaper to make than for FF. This would be equivalent to 80mm f1.9 on FF (very close to existing 85mm f1.8), making it a great portrait lens for croppers.

I'd call the Sigma 30mm 1.4 a great indoor lens - much faster than a 17-55 2.8, let alone the 24-105 4.0 I now use. This lens has gotten me some low light indoor shots that would have been very tough with any available zoom. The better image quality of the new Art version is interesting.
