If you have the focus setting on AI Servo or AI Focus then as soon as you half press the shutter the camera will still try to keep adjusting focus since it expects the object to keep moving. Therefore if you try manually focus the camera will override this and try and refocus on the object.
You need to switch your focus mode to ONE SHOT. Then if you half press camera will focus only once.. then you can refocus manually without a problem.

Hmm, so I've been on the hunt the past week or so for new gear with my 60D and I've seen the old(er) sigma 30mm f/1.4 ex dc running for around $439.99 at BH and Adorama. My big question is it worth it to wait for this Art edition 30mm to come down in price and get a different lens, or just pull the trigger on the 30mm ex dc? I'm assuming that this new lens will have superior optics, but is it worth it for a crop shooter like myself?

It's hard to answer this question without knowing what the cost of the new art lens will be. If the new lens comes in at $50 more than the current one, I would wait for the new one. If we are talking $700-800 for the new one, I would probably not wait.

I was working on a promotional video for Sigma and the producer told me last month that a 30mm was the next Art. I was quite meh at the time, even asking if he was not mistaking but he confirmed it. I now think it was logical. They probably worked on both the 35 and 30mm together, using similar solutions.

Hehehe, nop, sorry, I dont know anything else. I sure hope Sigma are going to make more videos with us as it was a pleasure to work with them. The CEO was very nice and loved my work more than the agency work.

My bet is that they are going to update all the primes they already have. 50mm first.

There's a hell of a difference between f1.4 and f2.8 and 30mm is the normal on crop. F1.4 permit you to shoot in low light without the noise from high ISO. You might think the DoF is too thick on crop but it's going to be a lot worst with f2.8.

30mm f1.4 would be my lens of choice for street photography and low light on crop. A 20mm f1.4 would have even less DoF blur...

Actually, this new 30mm f1.4 and the solid Sigma 85mm f1.4 would make the ultimate combo on crop for me.

Even though the new lens seems to be nice, I don't see much point in this kind of lens. In any case, it doesn't suite my style of shooting at all. 30mm f1.4 doesn't produce much background blur (unless yo do macro), and FL is a bit too short for portraits. For non-portrait needs, I'd rather use a fast zoom - more flexibility, and because even at f1.4 background is not blurred too much, it looks more like a photographer's mistake than something done on purpose.

I am not sure you've used a lens like this before. It's a HUGE difference from f2.8. It's like saying f2.8 doesn't provide any benefit over f5,6.

30mm on crop gives ~50mm FoV and it can easily create a lot of bg blur with a fast prime. I mean it's not like a 24mm on ff

i checked out the dimensions of the new 30mm, this what ive got.
New 30mm: 2.9" x 2.5"
Old 30mm: 2.97" x 2.3"

I don't think 30mm on crop is good for street photography (again, everyone has their own taste) - it is not too wide for the classical "in the middle of the action" reportage (probably ~17-24mm on crop), and too short for the "pick a person from a crowd" street lens (like 135L, 200L etc.).

What's the difference between "street photography" and "landscape photography" when it comes to FL?

After looking at the info out so far I think that I am going to have to try a copy of this lens. The only question is whether to buy it right off the bat and enjoy, or wait for a few reviews to confirm the MFT charts.
