I would never imply that under some circumstances you cant get good available light shots.
I don't think anyone think so. Lots of excellent examples but as you said it is not always available.

Zansho "I'd kill for a hot pink 40D" More info | Jan 30, 2013 10:13 | #32 Lit with 3 speedlites, two off camera, one on camera bouncing as well. The other two speedlites were meant for added light - set at around 1/4th power. Shutter slightly dragged at 1/50th of a second to bring in a bit more ambient, ISO about 800ish, F4. Light for this one was just the LED light sources up above, and 5D Mark III with a 35L mounted - ISO was around 3200, F2 or so, shutter at 1/60th or so. It's still a good shot, with the ambient light only impacting the image. This one was also ambient only, with a 40D at around 1600 ISO, and 135L wide open. I had the luxury of a spotlight on the subject, otherwise I'd have pulled my hair out with how dark this church was. This one is a slightly bounced flash (celing was really high, about 30 feet, if not more) at full power, for the subjects face, ISO 1600 or so, and a wide open 24-70 2.8. I apologize for the slight green cast, forgot to remove that in post. There's really no reason to fear using a flash. It's just another tool to add more light to your shot where you need it, and if the ambient light is friendly enough for you to use within your comfort zones, go for it. But to poo-poo flash as a "not better than ambient light, it's much more romantic and 'real!'" is just silly, imo. http://www.michaeljsamaripa.com

Just posting fill flash shots without the non flash alternative doesnt really help prove my point that fast glass alone isnt always enough. I really dont want to turn this into the "great fill flash" thread. Oops. I do have some good ones where Ive used fill and window light as main, or vice versa. The image I posted above isnt fill, its the only light, so no sense in posting a pure black image. Shane
