Just curious why Canon has updated these 2 lenses and at least on the 24-70, the price has doubled. Are they trying to keep photographers from being able to afford their lenses? Are the improved models worth twice their predecessors? Confused & sad.

Those are both professional lenses. Both have been significantly upgraded in sharpness. They upgraded them because they made them better than their predecessors which were good, but perhaps not capable of keeping up with the higher resolution sensors that canon is developing.
As whether they are worth it to you, they must not be at that price point.
