I think I understand the flipping to get a double, and then flipping again to get a quadruple, but I am a little stumped on how to get the circular kaleidoscope effect, since all of the selections are square or rectangular. If someone could elaborate on this, I would appreciate it!

You copy and paste, then rotate the pasted layer. You do 90°, then 45°, then 22.5°, etc. until you fill the image the way you want.

Do you increase the canvas size after the second doubling or does it stay the same after that?

Also (and I know this is obvious to those of you who can do it, but I am having a lot of trouble with it), how do you get pie-shaped slices from rectangular crops?

I appreciate your patience!:o

When you get to the point where you have the basic abstract, enlarge the canvas a little bit to give you some working room. Then all you have to do is duplicate the layer and free rotate (use Transform in Photoshop or you'll rotate all layers) the duplicate layer. Then change the layer properties to multiply. Keep doing that and using different degree increments. For it to be uniform use 90°, 45°, 22.5°, 11.25°, etc..

If you see areas getting too dark and you're losing detail use the eraser on the top layer to reveal the details of the bottom layer

katodog,
OK, that was VERY helpful!. Thank you for taking the time to explain it. It kind of makes sense now (not that I think I can actually DO it, but it kind of makes sense!). Thank you!

If you take a smoke shot and duplicate the layer, then free rotate it and see how it moves and interacts with the other layer, you'll see how it works. Once you do it once it all falls into place.

OK, so this is not technically a smoke shot, it is more of a fire shot (from a fireplace shot I already had). Just a very first attempt, but now I want to try it again when I have time to do the initial set up with incense. However, the instructions were very good, and here is my "quick-and-dirty" result. Am looking forward to trying this with more delicate smoke trails. Want to say again how much I appreciate the instructions!
