Camera for High School Photography Class

My 14 year old daughter is going to be taking a high school photography class. I was thinking of getting her the T4i, what do you think? Is there something different that would work as good or better? Will the a kit lens work, I would think so but I have no idea. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I would suggest getting her a used 40D or 50D for around $400 or less.

I find the lack of top screen on the t4i very inconvenient.

Check with the instructor. Schools around here use film cameras. YMMV

I agree - used 40D would be a great camera with better and easier creative control than the Rebel. Less MP but I could still go out and take an awesome shot with my 40D no problem.

A t3i would be great. Inexpensive and a great camera.

The 40D was my first camera, I loved it, it may be her first camera also.

Find out what the norm is. Maybe just a point and shoot? Wouldnt want her to be singled out/picked on for having a dslr

Lots of HS classes are still film, has this said it is digital and do they expect a DSLR?

My old high school's photography program was always film, I think only a year or two ago they started to switch to digital. Before you do anything, ask the teacher of the class what he/she recommends for the students. Some schools require the student to get their own camera, some schools may have enough cameras to loan out to the students when they need them. I think if it was me, I would get either a T2i, or a T4i if you think your daughter will appreciate in the long run the improved processor/AF etc. From what I remember in high school (I never took the photography program, but I remember seeing "expo's" held by the class around the school to display their work) the kit lenses will do just fine. Might as well set her up with the 18-55, 55-250 and maybe throw in the 50 1.8 for fun. If you opted for the T2i, there would be more money left over to set her up with that set of lenses.

T2i and 35mm prime.

My brother's school uses digital rebels, I think the T4i would be perfect.
It has the best AF of all the rebels and I Think Canon will add better support for their STM system soon which the T4i supports.

If they use film still get her the T4i and pick up a film rebel for $10 off fleebay.

Another vote for the 40D. I still use mine as a backup. It should provide your daughter with more than enough solid features to figure out if it is something she likes to do. Be prepared for the shock of your life if she starts asking for GLASS, LIGHTS, and software....Photograph​y can be an expensive drug habit...

The T4i is only about $50 more than the T3i, and has more useful features. I agree that the 40D is a great camera, but it lacks video capability, which your daughter and most young people really appreciate. My son bought a T4i last December, and he is getting some great shots with the EF-S 18-55 kit lens. I lent him my EF 28-135 and that has become his walk around lens. -rick

40d is not sold new anymore, seems a new camera would be better.
