Sowsun, thanks for the input. Just as you described it, i stumbled upon a youtube clip last night showing the zooming mechanism (very new to me) never seen this before.
I believe that 28 and 80 are the only mm where the lens is at it's most extended.

Hopefully i get it today and can get an in-depth "review"

Is this the video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsof4jhsD4c (external link)

It is pretty clear that the front element does not rotate as you zoom. It also has internal, rear Auto Focus, so I am quite certain that nothing changes when you AF.

Yepp, thats the one.
Whats your take on this? Good/bad?
I'm totally new to this kind of lens behaviour.

The ef 28-80mm 3.5-4.5 USM is a good lens and is very similar in build and Image Quality to:

24-85 USM
28-105 USM
35-135 USM
28-135 USM IS
70-210 USM

I found this link, and it says the that the front element DOES rotate and also extends slightly when focused: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/thread/633891 (external link)

Now that I think about it, I do remember that the back of the lens was sealed unlike most other lenses in this class.

The EF 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 is the only Ring Type USM lens I know that does this. It really isn't a problem at all if you put a filter extension on it. I also had an EF 28-70mm 3.5-4.5 II that did they same thing.

Many other lenses (eg. EF-S 18-55) also extend when you zoom, (and they also rotate when focused) but the front part does not retract into the front.

Here is a little more info: http://photo.net …gital-camera-forum/006jVR (external link)

What do you mean sealed? As in dust/water proof in the back by the metal mount?

Most consumer zoom lenses have an opening at the back where dust and other crap can enter. This 28-80 has a rear glass element that seals the rear of the lens completely.

Nice.

Anyway, here are my first impressions of the 28-80 USM (original version).

I got it used, although it was in mint condition you could see the rubber has worn off a bit (whiteness in the rubber)and the innertube wasent the most sturdy one. Absolutly not loose or wobbly.. but at 30mm it sinks in to 28mm by it self.
The feel is great, same size as the 85mm.
Good feel of the zoom and focus rings.
As always, very fast in focus thanks to the USM.
The "in-tube" movement is kinda awkward and new to me, and i havent figured out if i like it or hate it. I guess Canon engineers thought it was a good thing.. time will tell.
I snapped a few shots in low light conditions, sharpness seems good at wide open and at 3.5
I'm gonna test it more this weekend in bright outdoor conditions.

Overall it seems as good as my 50/85 in buildquality and AF speed. Have to look for the sweetspot and do some closeup to see the sharpness in my images.
Will post some photos at the end of the weekend.

Edit*

Just took a few photos on 3.5 28mm, 4.5 50mm and 5.6 80mm, uploading now.

This are all shot indoor under artificial light.
Ok, here are the links to super big versions:

28mm f/3.5
http://www.flickr.com …2/sizes/m/in/photostream/ (external link)

50mm f/4.5
http://www.flickr.com …6/sizes/m/in/photostream/ (external link)

57mm f/5.0
http://www.flickr.com …3/sizes/m/in/photostream/ (external link)

80mm f/5.6
http://www.flickr.com …1/sizes/m/in/photostream/ (external link)

As you can see it has some CA in the "canon" text on the lenscap. Especially on the 28mm photo.
Sharpness looks ok too me.

Yes, that looks pretty good, especially since it's wide open.

Yea, but the CA/purple fringe scares me.. it's not even that big of a contrast.. wonder what it looks like photographing a tree against a blue sky.

Try shooting the same scene with your 85mm 1.8 wide open and I think you will see that it is not so bad .
