Well, there are several ways one could approach this, but it's not my "style" so I can't offer any kind of "thorough" response.

There are special effects plug ins you can get to use in Photoshop and Elements that create this look. I think NIK makes one. Topaz Adjust has some of these. After choosing one of these adjustments you are then free to fine tune the photo with sliders.

Overcooked HDR. Nik hdr efx or photomatix will do this with little difficulty.

I wonder what would happen in LR4 if you cranked up the clarity all the way, and mucked around with the tone curve to raise the black point from something like 0 to 50. Probably get something kinda similar, though I'm not in front of my editing computer right now so I can't really say.

The defining characteristics of these images are:

1. Extreme tonemapping.
2. Lack of shadows (and contrast)
3. Low saturation

In LR4 or ACR, start by moving the Clarity slider to +100 for the tonemapping. Then move the Shadows slider to +100. Then move the Blacks slider toward +100 to remove more shadows. Then go to the Whites, Highlights, and Contrast sliders, and lower them individually until you get the look you want. Finally, go to Vibrance and lower it.

If those moves don't get you far enough, try rendering the image to a tif or jpeg and reloading that rendered image in LR and applying the same changes again. These dramatic moves in LR will tend to introduce noise, some some strong noise reduction may be necessary.

This method will emulate the style, but I doubt that's what "Studio Berger" did. I suspect their tonemapping was done with other tools like Topaz Detail or Topaz Adjust or one of the HDR programs. Then the shadow, contrast, and saturation work was done separately, either before or after the tonemapping.

As I look at more of those images I see many of the tell tale signs of the Photomatix HDR program. Blown highlights, significant halos, and wierd "pastel" color shifts. So I'd bet Photomatix was used for the majority of this effect, plus a little post processing in LR/ACR or Photoshop.

It just looks like the high pass filter without changing the layer blend to me.

I agree. That's all it looks like to me. High pass with maybe some reduction in layer opacity.

I sent him an email: This is the answers: I have made a small program myself. But hard to explain the procedure. He will obviously not reveal anything.

Open it up in Photoshop and apply as much crap as you can that would make the picture look horrible is my guess. Don't know why you would want to emulate that.
