Probably be a short thread but I need an answer. I just aquired a number of Chimera speedrings (for Speedotron VF) in a package deal. I don't own any Chimera softboxes and probably won't. I am thinking about picking up a couple Calumet Nova strip boxes and was wondering if they will fit on the Chimera speedrings? I know many brands are interchangeable and some are not. Anyone have experience with this?

Chimera have quite a number of different diameter speedrings. Are they the square black plastic ones by any chance? If so those are a regular size and should fit any softbox with standard 8mm rod ends.

I got three of the plastic type you are referring to and two aluminum 4-point rings. None of the quick release or 8-point. Thanks for the info. I think I'll go ahead with the Calumet strips and skip ordering any rings until I test out what I have.

One consideration will be rod angle. I suspect that the rod angles for a strip box will be different than the rod angle for a rectangular soft box.

I don't think all companies approach this the same way. My Creative Light speedrings have color coded holes and indeed have different angle selections for strip boxes vs square or 2:3 rectangular. Looking at photos of the Calumet and Chimera strips, they are just using equal spaced 4-point speedrings. I am thinking it might be interesting to put together a spreadsheet of speedring dimensions to see what interchangability there is among brands.

Just a quick update for anybody who may need this info some day. I picked up a Calumet Nova S36 strip box on ebay and it fit just fine on a Chimera speedring, plastic or aluminum.
