I posted this question on the 15-85 lens thread, but sadly had no replies. So, I though I would post it here in the hope that it would get more views.:)

"I have a question about using a CPL filter and EW-78E hood on this lens.

I know the filter thread on the lens is 72mm and was thinking of getting a 77mm filter and using a 72-77 step-up ring with my 15-85, which would then allow me to use the filter on other lenses with a 77mm thread, killing two birds with one stone so to speak.

So my question is. Would there be sufficient room inside the EW-78E hood to accommodate the ring and larger filter?

Any help from anyone using this combo would be very much appreciated.

I have done what you did. I have 5-6 different lens diamaters, so I went on ebay, and got 52-77, 72-77 67-77 and so on step up rings.

I then got this:
http://www.ebay.com …ain_0&hash=item3a5cacff84 (external link)

So if I have a filter on, I can use that hood with any lens.

Make sure you go right from whatever size you want to 77. Don't get the kits where you have to add them up to get to 77. So if for example, you have a 52mm, you only want one step up ring. Not 4-5 or however many there are.

I have tried the same thing and it does not work with the 15-85. The hood opening is smaller than 77mm and there is no way to get the hood on if you use the 72-77mm step-up ring.

I even tried installing the the ring and filter after the hood is in place, but it is very difficult to reach inside the hood and it might be impossible to get it off.

What other lenses do you have that use a 77mm? I don't see one in the lenses on your list.

When I used a lot of filters (with film), I used step rings so that I only had to buy a couple sizes. It was a pain in the arse, but partially justified because with film so many more filters were needed.

With digital, so few types of filters are needed I'd suggest just buy a 72mm CPL for use with this lens, then get a 77mm if needed for another lens later.

I do still use step rings, though.... a 58>72 and a 72>77 to make up a single stack of filters for storage.

You are right, I don't at the moment, but I was thinking If maybe some time in the future I decided to buy a different lens. For example, I believe the filter thread on the 17-55 is 77mm.

Thanks Mike. My hood is an after market one and not Canon. The inside diameter at it's narrowest measures a little under 90mm, so I thought I might just get away with it. I can easily remove and fix the lens cap with the hood in place and it's an original cap and not center pinch.

A quick update. I cut a piece of cardboard, which measures about 78mm and as you can see in the image below, there is quite a bit of space between the cardboard and the filter. based on this last test, I think I shall go ahead and give it a whirl. Will report back when I have decided which filter to get.

I still can't decide between Marumi, or Hoya.

Thanks everyone for you advice.
