Did your 7D come with the updated firmware preinstalled, or did you still have to upload that manually?

It all depends on when the camera was manufactured. The last update to the 7D firmware was mid-September. It is possible to have a "brand new" 7D that was manufactured prior to that but updating the firmware is not difficult to do. The latest version is 2.0.3.

I got mine last week from B & H. Already had 2.0.3 firmware installed.

It doesn't matter either way, because it's trivially easy to update.

If you are comfortable hand-operating a modern SLR, you are easily capable of running a simple update process.

Turns out a gripped 7D + 622 + 580exII + 70-200 2.8 IS MK2 is BLOODY HEAVY! Who knew?!!

True, it is a bit nerve-wracking the first time, but if you follow the instructions,it's a breeze and any future updates are simple.

Anyone have any issue with the update? I have version 1.2.5 and would like to update but have a shoot tomorrow @ 9am....most likely best to wait until after just to be safe.

I have never had any issues with the firmware update but I would probably wait until after the shoot, just in case.

I would wait until after your shoot to upgrade the FW. Not because I think the FW update may go badly, but rather because after the update the camera may not perform the same as you've come to expect. The new features in the update include new menu screens and a host of new functions, assigned to different buttons. Unless you're familiar with these, it may throw you off your shoot tomorrow. If you're doing this gig for money, I would seriously wait on the update and do it when you have some down-time to see what's changed and how it affects your pictures and working mode.

No issues here either. When the update came out there was a thread of people updating and posting their experiences and I seem to recall that one or two did have a problem. I would wait to be on the safe side unless you need the larger buffer space for the shoot.
When you download the file just check to make sure the file size matches what the notes say it should be. That lets you know that you got the whole file and aren't missing any bits.

I believe you get it right from Canon's website.
