Would you all recommend hoods for the 50 f/1.4 and the 85 f/1.8

Do either of these lenses really necessitate a hood?

Yes, it can protect the lens both physically and the image quality.

If I buy a lens, I will buy a hood for it if it doesn't come with one.

You use the hood inside? I don't think I've ever put a hood on those lenses, just on the landscape captures with my 19-35 Tamron in bright light.

Always. Any lens. It may not stop twigs in the brush, or dog noses, but at least it'll keep off-axis light and my big clumsy hands off the front of the lens.

Defintely. It helps prevent glare from a non-protection angle. That's always a good thing. And a hood generally provides more protection than a filter, although both are good to have.

It's also a way of making your lens more idiot proof.

What they all said above that's positive about using lens hoods.

I've used lens hoods on all my lenses for 40 years plus - and no "protection" filters - and all my lenses, including those that have passed their 40th birthday, are in great shape because of their wearing the hoods. The lens hoods have taken their share of knocks and kept the lenses from being abused.

my 85 1.8 wears one all of the time, ever since I bought it, because it's one of the biggest peice of glass I have and I want to protect it.

I use hoods on mine, for all the reasons stated above.

And on top of all the points of protecting the front lens element, they just look bitchin'...
