Well that's more reasonable. I guess they realised no one wanted a slow, wide, $800 prime.

Its probably the correct one though ;)

How else does one explain the lack of reviews on the e-tailer websites, the lack of interest on flickr, the lack of interest on this board?

ignorance :D? you sure do talk about them alot for not being interested. i remember when the sigmalux was the best 50mm you could own. that myth persisted for quite awhile and now that siggie prime has about as much esteem as a dog turd. keep following the herd...they're never wrong :-)!

I'm not interested in buying one, it doesn't follow that I am disinterested in what Canon is releasing since I am invested in the brand!

I actually still think the siggy 50 is one of the best performing AF fast 50's on the market today, and if I were in the market for a 50 costing more than $150, it would be my choice.

This has nothing to do with following the herd, if you read my posts you'll notice I'm frequently (not always obviously) against the herd at least here on POTN!

And although of course there is a chance that I am wrong in my suppositions about the reason for this particular discount, I am quite sure the chance of my being right with regard to there being comparatively very little interest in this lens, is more than decent.

Are you perhaps a little defensive because you bought one? But if you disagree with the price commentary, then why did you wait until it went on sale?

While only Canon knows, I think everyone expected the prices to fall on these stabilized primes. They couldn't have been selling many...

So what is the general consensus on this lens?

Do you folks think it is a sharp lens?

Thanks

New IS primes are great optically, and they are light too.

Fuji XE-1, Zeiss ikon, Hasselblad; I love shooting film as a conceptual idea :)

Anyone else have any comments on this lens.

The comparrisons at digital-picture to the 24 both 1 and 2 are close.
Any first hand comments?

Thanks

Don't have any experience with this lens, and can see why it wasn't popular at the original price. Couple quick observations (both + and -)
-Wasn't this one of the lenses that focused very well on newer bodies when lensrentals did their tests, and found that newer Canon bodies + newer lenses focused far more reliably than older lenses/older body combinations?

-Wasn't this lens also targeted towards video? (might be wrong on this one)

-Big negative is why you'd buy this if you're shooting crop, when you can get a great deal on the Sigma 30mm f1.4 right now. Yes you play the Sigma lottery, but worst case you send it to Sigma, or you might have an older crop body (or 7D) that let's you fine-tune the lens.

I'd be all over this if it were the 24mm version.

f2.8 is zoom territory for many. Exceptions could be made for exceptional lenses, but the price was high enough it puts too many good (faster primes or f2.8 zooms) alternatives on the table.
