Do you think that instead of incorrectly focusing, that the sigma primes have a focus shift too? Just unwell documented?

I have never played the sigma lottery I went straight to the 85L canon has and for the portraits I shoot it puts out lovely bokeh and crisp shots like the set above very little to no Photoshop needed . lovely set by the way. (Smorter)

I played it with two lens I owned and lost. I tried the Sigma 85 in store and it failed 2 out of every 3 shots taken on a stationary object shot at the same distance.
After the Sigma 50 failure/1.4 I owned, I figure it's just better to wait it out and get what I want the first time. Sometime late summer early fall is when I have plans to purchase the Canon 85L.

BTW smorter, those are awesome pics.

Again there are those who like to bash the sigma, happened with the 35mm f/1.4 when it was announced even no one had a real life experience with it. Just because the older models had some problems it doesn't mean the new ones have.

With the 85mm f/1.4, I haven't seen any negative reports that would stand out when compared to canon 85mm f/1.8/1.2. There are bad copies in canon's lineup as well as with sigma. Goes same way here, it doesn't mean that if there are few copies that have some kind of problems, all of them are crap. Mine is perfect!

I've "played" the "lottery" with 11 Sigma lenses. I've won every time.

By contrast, 3 (well, 2 since the nifty fifty doesn't really count) of my Canon lenses had problems. The canon 50/1.4 had less than consistent focus, and my 24-105 had an issue with the IS.

Shall I start telling people to avoid Canon lenses now?

If the 85L and the Sigma 85 cost the same, I'd go for the 85L because you get 1.2 for the same price as 1.4. But they don't cost the same, so in reality I'd go for the Sigma because I can't justify (although I can afford) the money for the 85L.

When trying to assess a lens based on the public's experience, I go to B&H reviews and set them ranking from lowest to highest. Then I calculate the percentage of 3 stars or less.

If a lens is at 3% it's a 'run to buy it' :D

3-5% is a definite buy

5-10% is a keep in mind, if you have bought all other lenses in the list...

more than 10% is run to the exit...

The Sigma scores nearly 16%...

I didn't bother with the 85L but the EF 85 f1.8 comes in at 1.6%... I think this lens is the direct competitor to the Sigma...

Not quite sure what you're talking about other than you appear to like the Sigma brand and had good luck with it.

I however haven't and will wait until I can afford a lens from a company I believe has a much superior product.

My first 85mm lens was the Canon 1.8, if you wanna see sample images, go check out my Flickr page, you can see all the Exif info and it tells you what lens in (mm) on the right side of the page too.
I been contemplating on the the Sigma 85 just because I like Sigma lenses and previously owned the 50mm 1.4 (which I loved) and now have the 35mm 1.4 which is an awesome lens. I wish someone around here had the Sigma 85 so I can test it out to see how much I'll like it.

I had 135L and sold it when I got sigma 85mm f1.4. Sigma is as good at f1.4 as 135L was at f2.

Agree.

Although very nice photos posted above by 85L, wish there were side by side shots with sigma f1.4 and then see how many could tell them apart.
