Northern Jacana Displaying His Weaponry

Aside from his long beak and head shield, this Northern Jacana (Code 4; very rare in North America) is also armed with 2 very sharp bone spur on either side of his wings....

3.And the spurs are well hiden when they are not in-flight.

Stunning series Alfred. I photographed this species in Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica last year but never got a shot a lovely as any of these.

No, not likely in Toronto...LOL. These are southern species that could show up around Texas once in a blue moon.....
