Tamron lens

I have been looking at the Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di lens. Does any one have any feedback regarding the quality and sharpness of this lens. I currently have a Digital Rebel XT with the kit lens and Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 II USM. I am looking for a faster lens. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you do a search you will find that this lens is a very popular one among members of this forum. The Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 is also very popular. I love my Tamron as do most others.

I think some of the Tamron lenses are really a good choice. An equal Canon lens usually costs more. I have an old Tamron 19-35 and it's fine. The new ones are more solid and work fast. The 2.8 if really great!

Optically excellent (assuming a normal copy), but build and AF speed could be better. Quite well-received by most who use it, some prefer wider than 28mm as a starting point on a walk around lens. All in all one of the best bang for buck lenses around.

The 28-75 I own is a great lens. It is so sharp and colour is great. I also own a 17-35 that had to go back for recalibration. so check the lens on your body before you buy it.

Plus side is its very sharp and the lightest and smallest in its class.

Where the canon and sigma beat it is in build quality and focus speed, The canon focuses fastest then the sigma and lastly the tamron. Also, the tamron focus ring turns while in auto focus and the others do not.

Yes, it works fine on my EOS30 35mm film camera body.

I love mine too but I did have to send it in for re-calibration when I first got it because of focus issues. It's been great ever since.

I think the AF system may leave you wanting a bit. The ring USM on the 28-105mm is very quick and near silent when compared to most Sigma/Tamron zooms that use the front ring type non-HSM (USM) systems.

I'd try one out at a local camera shop to be sure. The build of the 28-105mm is pretty good too, so you'd need to decide if the Tamron met your expectation.

Else it should perform optically better then your 28-105mm on the Canon crop body, but I'm not sure the AF speed would be any faster.

I think he was referring to aperture when he said "fast."

I love mine - much better lens than the 28-105 - in all ways except size. It is a bit larger and heavier and requires 67mm filters. While the AF is a bit louder, I don't notice it being any slower than the USM on the 28-105 - if it is it must not be by much...

Welcome to the forum. The Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di is an excellent lens. I think it can hold it's own agains't the Canon 24-70 for image quality when used in the right hands. Ok the Canon is better built and faster focus, but it is also 3x the price of the Tamron.
