I take tons of pictures and use the Manual focus but it is really hard to tell where your at with the focus on such a small screen......I basically guess and take extra pics just incase.
Does anyone have any secrets to using the manual focus?

The one thing i've learned is for close-up stuff, it's easier to move the camera around until the image is crisp (if that's an option) than fiddle with the focus.

Also, note that the MF adjustment bar is marked with distances, if you're good at judging distances, that's helpful. (It's adjustable between feet or meters)

Goofing around the other day, I noticed that you can connect to a TV (as if you were doing a slide show) and use it as a big monitor while you're shooting... If you happen to be shooting near a TV, it might make it easier to see your focus on a bigger screen

Also, read up on depth of field and hyperfocals: certain apertures and zoom ranges give you a deeper depth of field that allows you more focus wiggle room

There is also focus Bracket (bkt) which takes a couple extra pictures on either side of your focal point auomatically when set, or alternatively, after you manual focus, if you hit the set button the camera will start at the MF point and then search for a better auto focus for you.

I get good results if working off a tripod
1.set MF the best you can and take a shot

2.switch to display mode zoom in and search around you can easily see what is in
focus
3. press the shutter button to get back to photo mode then without touching the
focus wheel push the MF button twice and you are are right back where you left
off make appropriate adjustments and take another shot

works for me good luck
