copy pasted from another forum, but since this is dedicated Canon forum, I figure you know more. ( although some members are on both forums)

well i'm in the market for a DSLR, I want to play around with the AE-1 to get some experience.
can you tell me what lense is what ? i kinda know what its good for, but not really.
I've been reading a lot, but i don't have enough info on these lenses to tell what focal lenth they are, the f# is on it. and only one lense says 200mm. and the other is a 28mm.

I don't have any experience of FD lenses, but I think they are FD lenses.

A quick google:

A thread saying that its very unlikely:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=57023

A website saying that they made their own adapter:
http://www.rit.edu …xt-eos-to-fd-adapter.html (external link)

I think the main issue is you need to have an optical adapter, so your going to reduce the image quality by using an adapter.

I guess it really depends on the lenses and your idea of good image quality, and what kind of adapter you get.

Not sure what to say about these other than you're pretty well stuck with using the FD mount SLR's. They are pre the current Canon EOS mount. Thus they won't work directly with any DSLR because the mount needs an expensive adaptor, which in turn will impact badly on image quality. Note that adaptors for other mounts don't necessarily impact negatively, just it seems with the FD's. All my lenses use adapters and the IQ is excellent.

Wow condyk, do you even own a canon lens?

On that note, has anyone had experience of Nikon F mount lenses on EOS with an adapter - it seems that in general the adapters don't use optics and often work quite well. I have found, however, that they range from $25 on ebay (in my budget) to $200 on websites (nowhere near my budget). My dad has some old manual F's, so when I get my 350D it would be nice to use them until I can afford some nicer alternatives (he has a 35mm 2.5, a 50mm 1.8 and a 135mm 2.8)

the pictures look like the ones I saw from a Fred Miranda posting. If I remember correctly he was selling the four lenses and camera for under $200. I thought it was a great deal if you want to shoot film on a decent camera. Of course it is hard to tell what condition the camera is in (does the meter work etc). As others have said these lenses will not work with a DSLR but it is a pretty comprehensive film package for a good price. you have wide angle, standard moderate telephoto and Zoom. Enough to keep you busy taking film pictures for a while....

Someone already got the lens designations for you.
The "1 : #" is the aperture number.
And they are FD mount lenses (presuming the Vivitars mount on the AE-1)
They will not work on EF mount without an adapter , The adapters can be found at Adorama and B+H. The catch is you may or may not find the quality acceptable with the adapter. My Dad got the Hama adapter and it seems to be working okay for him, but he got it to just play with a longer FD mount lens he had.
Even with the adapter everything will apparently be in manual mode to work correctly.

On the flip side if only using AE-1 should work fine.

I've owned a number but am currently on a MF only jaunt. All my MF lenses perform better than anything else I've had within the same range, but cost a fraction of the price. I haven't looked at Nikon lenses much as I'm happy with what I have. Look on ebay for the Nikon adaptors for EOS. They are reasonably priced. It's a great idea to try the older lenses you have.

That AE-1 appears busted to me, no shutter/film advance lever, appears broken off.

The lenses are OK but nothing special for an AE-1.

ok well, i copy pasted and forgot to edit my post before hand.

this is going to be a weekend camera or just something to play with.
the lenses will stay with the AE-1 only. they are FD lenses and i do not plan on getting any others. i will play with what i have only.

the Pics are all mine and the camera+ lenses have been in the family for over 20 years now. YES the lever is/was broken, the camera is at the shop being fixed as i type this.

I do not want adaptors or anything else. for the sake of the thread forget i want a DSLR :)

what i would like to know is if there is a (i believe) ND filter for taking long exposure daytime pictures for the zoom lense.
I simply want to know if i have good stuff and what the lenses are for. (although its been answered)

thank you all for your time, any other questions or comments, please feel free to msg me
