Here are some photos of Stoney, 10 month old black lab. I am him puppy raiser and he will eventually go on to be a guide dog for a visually impaired person.
I took him out today and shot a few pictures. I would appreciate any critique.

~all were shot with 60D & 50mm.

Great job focusing on the eyes. I think the exposures and processing are pretty much on the money. Watch your backgrounds, though. Those super-bright spots will really detract from any image.

He looks like he'll make a wonderful guide dog. Raise him well.

Thank you, I was pleasantly surprised with how I seemed to "nail" the focus. This doesn't happen often with this lens. I was also rather happy with the PP. I purchased some actions, but hadn't gotten a shot that looked good with then..finally got the shots! :D I will keep that in mind about the background, as well!

Anyways, thank you for your time & encouragement!

Hard for me to give any kind of critique...those guide dogs hold a special place within me. I've seen how they completely transform peoples' lives.

Pretty doggie... seems like your levels can be brought down to really darken the coat to be more black. Right now he looks like a "grey lab"

They are sharp and that is a handsome pup - love the black labs.

The blow-out in #1 is a bit much for my likes but I do like the angle - his level.

I agree that the levels have to come down to get him black again. And you are leaving way too much head room in 3, 4, and 5.

Nice dog, but the processing turns me off, I like seeing the coats as they are, this one just looks green/grey. Would like to see one non edited ;)

For the last one I purposely meant to have all the extra space in there, but I do agree with you about cropping tighter next time.
thank you!

I think adjusting the white balance will fix this washed out look? What setting was this taken on?

Dogs are carnivores, they need meat. You can add veggies to her meat, mince them up at first.

It was shot in manual, but with "cloudy mode" WB set. Reasoning for this was to capture the warmer tones.

Labs with their ears down look "sad" to me. When I'm doing still shots of labs I'll blow a duck call to get them to perk their ears up. If your dog doesn't associate any excitement with a duck call, then make a noise to get them excited.

Nice looking dog!

He's so laid back and serious that I've ran out of weird noises! I will have to try a duck call next time, thank you!

Like your shots, but on my screen (calibrated) they all seem to have a green tinge to them, so I took one of my favorites of your shots and tweaked it a bit...
