I am wanting to get more serious about wildlife photography. Really want a Canon 500 or 600mm L lens. But I have no first born I can sell,,,,,LOL Just kidding. But they are currently out of my range. So I got to looking at the Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM for Canon and was wondering if ti was a good lens. Would that be a good option or stick with the 400 L I have now and put on a convertor and get a 5D mak ll? They will be used on a 7D

Thanks in advance for the help

I really can't give you advice there -- you might want to check in 1) the thread for that Sigma lens in the Lens Archive sub-forum:

https://photography-on-the.net …6&highlight=sigma+150-500

2) Check in the Lens sub-forum...

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=33

I think I've heard that the Sigma has some "issues" but I really don't know the specifics, you might ask in those places for input!

Not exactly wildlife for subjects, but these examples from a Sigma 150-500mm optical stabilizer lens suggest what the lens can accomplish.

As you've discovered, the Sigma 150-500mm is the least expensive stabilized 500mm lens. You've learned prices of other 500mm lens and have probably found that no one is likely to buy one of those lenses for you.

DC Fan, if the 150-500 ends up at f/6.0, does this not "block" AF for most of our cameras at full zoom?

Fortunately, no. AF continues working fine :)

The lens lies to the camera, says it has a max aperture of f/5.8 when it is really f/6.3.

Here are a couple, shot on a 40D. The animal is a coney.

Don't loose sleep over the fact that Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM lens has a maximum aperture of f/6.3 at 500mm. It (and virtually all f/6.3 lenses) will autofocus quite well on Canon cameras with an f/5.6 autofocus limit.

Don't take the f/5.6 limit too literally.
