Hi everyone:

I was driving in to work today at 6 am Feb. 4th (Ontario, black sky) and looked at the moon: looked like a partial eclipse on the top limb? Quite noticeable - I though maybe a cloud was obscuring it but I stopped the car and watched for a few minutes to confirm. (and no camera, just the lousy cell phone cam)

Did anyone else see/photograph this?

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

The Moon is a waning crescent at the moment, so it was not an eclipse. (Lunar eclipses can only happen at Full Moon.)

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi SRM:

I'm aware I sound like an idiot,:) but I am an experienced skywatcher, lol. The upper limb seemed to have a shadow on it, that took a 'bite' out of the top. No clouds, no atmospherics.

Yeah, I know how it sounds, but I also know what I saw. :) I wish I'd had my camera with me!

Cheers, anyway.

I agree with Chris , eclipses only happen with a full moon . I'm an experienced observer also and have been for the past 17-yrs and i have never heard of a wanning crescent moon having an eclipse . If you truely believe what you saw was an eclipse i suggest you contact a local observatory or astronomy club and talk to them and see if anyone else witnessed the same event . I know there are hundreds of amateur astronomers in Canada , and the UK and i can guarantee there were quite a few watching the moon last night . Perhap you can get someone to back your event seeing . Who knows , there could always be a new event happening for the first time . Here is a link to a UK forum i'm a member of and they are extremely active posting more pictures than i have seen any other forum post . Perhaps you can register there and post your topic and see if anyone can be a witness also .
