I'm buying a 20d and need some help with the lenses. I took 2 years of photography about 10 years ago and need to do a lot of brushing up...I don't remember how to read the numbers for the lenses. I've been using a HP 945 for the last year and it's horrible(so many blurry pictures). We take pictures of wakeboarding, taekwondo, swimming, b-days, indoors, outdoors, and other normal family stuff. Money isn't an issue, although I don't need the best you can get and spend more than necessary. Thanks in advance for the help.

Tricia

Welcome. This is a great place to learn. Search for the EF lenses section and also, you can go on the usa.canon.com to see what Canon offers.

You might want to look at the Top Ten Starter Lens Recommendations in the EF Lens FAQ sticky at the top of this forum.

I'd probably start with a high quality standard zoom like the 24-70 2.8 DG EX Macro Sigma and take it from there. I'd also get a 50mm 1.8 to give you some flexibility for indoor shooting if lights are low. The Canon 70-200 f4 is a lovely lens but I'd wait ti see if you need a faster aperture for your indoor/sports shooting. If you do then the Sigma 70-200 2.8 will help. You'll know what you need from using the 24-70mm light wise. You'll also learn whether your interests lie in the wider angle, portrait, or longer zoom ranges. Just get to know your camera and lens for a month and try to learn full manual operation over time. The auto modes are fine but getting a great exposure is often what counts and it tends be better to have control rather than le tthe camera do it. Personally, I'd stick with a 350D in your shoes and spend more on the lenses you want. Not sure the 20D adds value for you based on what you said. It's also due for replacement sooner rather than later, but that also means the price is at an all time low mright now.

Enjoy ... and welcome!
