You might think this is wired, but I've been buying items for the G1X and I still haven't bought one! I kind of like getting the groundwork ready for this puppy. I'll be taking this camera for a round trip cruise to the islands of Hawaii from Los Angeles (14 days). So far these are the item's I've bought

270EX II Speedlight - nice and compact flash, tested it out on my 30D and lit up the room bouncing off the ceiling.
Onyx 1040 shoulder bag - small and light to keep G1X, flash and accessories snug.
600x 32GB SDHC memory - never used one before. Since both my DSLR's use compact, my current ancient P&S uses............. xD memory! It's a Fuji F31fd. I'll be also shooting lots of video, so I figure get a good size card, I'll probably be getting 1 or 2 more cards of the same memory capacity.
Storeacell 4 AA battery case - holds my eneloops for the flash.
Kauba memory case - it's small and will hold 4 SD cards.
GorillaPod Hybrid - this is the first time I'm using such a tripod, and one this small. But I've played with one, and the many positive reviews on it made me get it. This should help getting pics of all my family, not just the wife and daughter, or me and daughter.

There are still a few things I still need to get. One is a wrist strap, thinking of the Canon WS-20. Like I said, another or maybe 2 more memory cards. Need extra batteries, not sure how many, if I should stick with canon, or get another brand battery, but if so which one? And finally, the star of the show the G1X. I'm hoping by March to have it. I'll buy the other items at the end of this month. So am I crazy for going backwards instead of getting first the G1X? :)

Im thinking real hard on getting a used one. I just know that the second I buy one, Canon will announce a new replacement with all the features they "forgot" on the original.. sigh

I can't answer as to your sanity but I would like to comment on the 270 EX II. Bought one for my G12 as the 580s and 550s were just too awkward to use and it works great. Now carry it in my pocket when I'm walking around with the 5D MkII, just in case I need some flash.

That's what I'm going to do, get a used one from ebay or here if low enough. I've seen some go for $430 or so now. I'm not sure if Canon will make a new line of aps-c P&S. If they do come out with another one though, I'll wait till they come down on price too, in the mean time I'll enjoy the G1X all that time.

I bought 2 batteries (non-Canon) and a battery charger (non-Canon, works in the car too) for less than $25 on overstock. Both are just as good as the Canon originals.

I also bought two non-Canon batteries, one from Amazon and one from my local Batteries Plus. The one I bought from Batteries Plus had a full charge, which meant I got to start enjoying my camera immediately, instead of waiting a few hours for the stock batteries to charge.

I'll likely buy an aftermarket charger...I have an annoying habit of misplacing them when I really need them and then finding them a few days later

I bought a case, but I'll be returning it as I found it to be a bit too cumbersome. I bought a hood, and from what I can tell it does indeed make a difference in the contrast.

Canon may very well come out with an updated G1X tomorrow, but I have already taken mine places where a DSLR just won't do, such as here where the camera survived its first tumble! Or rather...it survived the photographer taking a tumble with the camera ;)

I'm looking at the Photive batteries, it's 1200 mAh vs Canon's 920 mAh. Plus it's only $11 at Amazon (external link)! Canon does include a charger with the G1X, right?

For me the JJC Auto lenscap made the biggest difference to handling.
I have a couple of very nice Weiss batteries..quality at a fraction of the Canon Price and , yes . Canon does provide a charger.

I just added the auto lens cap to the list last night. So I figured that I'll be spending about another $100 on other items.

I'd seen the pics, and seen videos, I've seen how fast it focuses (really now, I'm coming from a 2007 P&S and my DSLR's are even older). So I now I'll like it. And tkbslc, YOU'RE NOT HELPING! :D

I'd rather have a camera than accessories. Just sayin!

Well I know I'll be needing those accessories for my upcoming trip. So I can do with my current DSLR's for pics around the house.

To replace the standard lens cap, I got a thread adaptor and a standard 58mm Canon cap, I feel much more at home with one of those (I did buy the camera first though ;) )
