This was taken back in '86. We got wind that the Shuttle was coming to Barksdale AFB so we hightailed over there. It's kind of sad to see the print in such poor condition.

I wish I could scan the photo that I have of an SR71 refueling :D but it's too big. It was a gift. I need to find the video that I have of it sitting back in a corner and then later taking off from Barksdale. It was taken with the TV camera that the First Baptist Church of Shreveport owned :D

Take a picture of it with your digicam! If it's framed and behind glass, just watch for reflections. I'll bet it's a cool picture.

Cool shots. I remember the first piggy back flight. I was in grade school and our teacher brought a media center television into our classroom so we could watch it. I was hooked right away...

Oh ya, I'm hangin' on!

Jon.

You can probably get the big version here. Go to the Aviation Folder. Then Military. Then click get original. I'll put something better up tomorrow: My Foto Site (external link)

Awesome bird... From what I understand the entire plane was designed using only slide rules. Remember those guys? There were no computers to help them out back then. My brother in-law worked with "messages" relating to the SR-71's in England many many years ago. I always wanted to know what they were but he died without ever telling anyone...

You should see the video that I have. I'm burning it to DVD right now. I thought that I had lost it. You can see both white helmets thru the windows. I don't know what they were doing? I doubt if it was film drop off. Possibly something needed to be checked? It had to have been one of the last flights that it made. Lots of security around it. If not for the extreme zoom of the tv camera the video would have been a non-event. That thing zoomed up tight. When the SR71 took off they zoomed in on the fuel over flow. It climbed out at what looked like a 70 degree deck angle. Made a sweeping climbing turn to the right and disappeared. Probably lost site of it somewhere around FL300... amazing. It turns out that they were there when the shuttle landed. I have never watched the tape that far. They got some good footage of it landing and taking off.

I saw the contrail and I heard the boom when it made it's record breaking coast to coast run. A buddy of mine and I were at work when we heard the boom. I work in the gas processing business so booms are usually bad. We both knew that sonic booms were illegal over the US and it didn't sound like any of our stuff blew up so we ran outside and sure enough... there was white streak going across the sky like nothing either of us had ever seen.

It's my all time favorite aircraft. The F-4 Phantom is a close second. Actually... if it flies... I like it. :D

When my oldest son was in USAF tech school I got to sit in the cockpit of an F-15 (huge) am F16 (tight). Once he graduated I've got a couple of tours of the AC130U and AC130H gunship (a most excellent aircraft). When my youngest son graduated from tech school I got to see a cruise missile up close and personal. He's up in Minot, ND now and I don't get to see him much. He works on nuke stuff so I doubt if I could get a tour of that. On grim note... When the president of Iran makes noises... they practice loading and unloading nuclear warheads in various munitions... bummer...

I'll try to put a better pic of the pic up tomorrow...

PS- Slide rules... What do you mean remember? I have one in my laptop case :D It was a gift. And I have used it just to see if I still could.

Doh! I don't think I've touched or even seen one for at least 25 years!

Here are a couple of shots of the SR-71 they have up in richmond.

I would have taken more but I snapped these two as we were driving. The trucks Master Clutch cylinder broke and the clutch pedal didn't work and I was trying to teach my friend how to drive with no clutch so we could get back home, about 80 miles away and he didn't want to stop. :)
