I have noticed a lot of 7D's for sale here, 4 plus a day here, but not many rebels or really 40/50D's....Is it just the timing that 7D people are newer purchases, and are into upgrades , or are 40/50D just back ups. I know I see other bodies for sale, but it has to be be 4 - 1 , 7D vs others?

Reasons?

I guess they can't handle the super sexiness it exudes...

Seriously though, I think people give up on it b/c it requires more understanding and care to reach a complete level of comfort, along with good glass. I suppose some users have neither the patience or the glass to really bring the best out of it.

I look every day on a couple of boards, and I see a mix. Often when 1 or 2 go up for sale, others get off their duff and list theirs too. I have seen the same trend for 5D2s for example, and 1D4s. The 40Ds/50Ds were sold this way a few years back when the new rebels and the 7D came out. It's the 3-4 year sell off plan. :D

It is an interesting study actually, on average, humans seem to have a 3 year limit on possessions before they decide to move on. This seems to be prevalent across many areas of electronics, as well as the automotive world (and strangely the relationship arena too). If you can get past the 3-4 year mark, you then tend to hold onto it for a very long time afterwards.

I think a lot of 7D owners are making the switch to the 5D3.

I think many are anticipating the release of a 7DII. Rumor control has one coming out this year. After Canons latest disappointed remarks with the Crop body sales performance, who knows whats gonna happen. 5D3 and 1Dx has a lot to do with it as well. The AF systems are killer and much better than the 7D.

Teamspeed,

That is interesting study, because you do have the 40d/50d threads, etc where people have there bodies for a long time, then you see other posts, especially I see some, but not all, people upgrading and they state they have 1800 clicks and are in need a upgrade....
I just have noticed a lot of 7D's, probably because I am debating on buying one so I notice it more.

Or it's just time in the 7D life cycle to sell on anticipation of a replacement.

I'm going to say its mainly due to the fact that there are full frame alternatives at a more affordable price so some are making the switch :)

I gave up the 7D for a 5D/t2i combo. Later I'll be upgrading to another 1DS series body, most likely a 1DS MII or even 1DS MIII.

I have had my 7D for over two years and it has been a great experience. I am selling mine in order to go full frame. What I've learned after using the 7D for two years is that my shooting style/interests (low light concert photography, early morning landscapes) fit in better with the 6D. I wouldn't be surprised if many people are selling their 7Ds for similar reasons. The 7D is a very capable camera and I've had some great results but I do not need the extra reach, 8fps and I'm interested in using a FF camera. If I could afford two cameras I think a FF camera with a 7D combo would be the way to go. My $.02

i had planned to sell my 7D and buy a 6D, for the reasons you've cited. instead, i bought a 6D, sent the 7D into Canon for the locking mode dial, and plan to sell the 60D.

I had the 7D since it launched. My plan was always to wait for the 5dmkII replacement before going FF. The 7D is a wonderful camera. Did a fantastic job for the three years i owned it. Once the jobs came in that paid for the 5dmkIII it was time to sell while resale value was still high.

I'm currently shopping for a used 7D... Lot's of choice on this forum. Locally on kijiji, though, not so much: everyone is dumping their Nikons, keeping their Canons.

I think you'll find a lot of people bought a 5dmk2 since the price has dropped a ton lately, or upgraded to the 6d or 5dmk3. I still have mine and will keep it as my backup to my 5dmk3
