I was goofing around with ice typography this afternoon... and I came up with this idea --

Its the word "LOVE" in wooden letters with red sparkles, stuck together. I froze the letters in a big bin in the deep freezer, then today I finally heated it up a bit on the stove and chipped off some of the ice... I then stuck it in the backyard and began shooting. I kinda liked this effect but wondered what you think of it?

I know the "L" could be a bit sharper. I was shooting at 2.8, on a 70-200 so I probably should increase that a bit for better sharpness. I was also at shutter 250 and ISO 400 with a 430 ex ii on auto mode.

Its not perfect. Its just a concept shot for now... something for me to think about. Kinda like that it symbolizes that love can melt someone or something even when it seems impossible....

all feedback welcome! Thanks!

I think the idea is quite good, it's the execution which causes it to not work at all IMO.

First of all the background makes the magic disappear.. instead of symbolizing love can melt the ice, it just looks like a couple of letters in front of a wooden door. Nothing more, nothing less.

Try a shallower depth of field, and a background that is complimenting instead of distracting.

I like the idea though!

Combination of ice on word Love is a great idea. I immediately visioned and image where it was in foreground and in the back two silhouettes or blurred persons walk away to opposite directions, or something like that. A dark photo where could perhaps light paint the logo so that the ice really stands out.

Keep on shooting!

Hmmm great ideas! Thanks! In giving this one further thought, perhaps I could have a couple kissing in the background during a snowstorm or something? Not sure... But definitely not done with the frozen love letters yet. :D

And through the modern miracle of refrigeration, you can continue doing this all summer long, too. That brings out many more opportunities/concepts. If you work quickly...

Image editing OK, encouraged, and expected. Thank you for helping me learn!

Have you ever thought of bringing it indoors and shooting it with a black velvet background and let the ice melt and drip. I'm thinking that more dramatic light is needed. LOVE the concept, keep working at it. "chipping away at it", bad pun intended. : )
