For those of you who have had issues with the 5D3 and speedlight in low light, hopefully this will be the answer...

Very Cool. My assistant just got her 5D3 and her firmware number says #3 where as mine says #2... didnt even think to test it this AM when she brought it over.

Excellent - that issue is really my only gripe about the 5D3. I've brought it up here a couple times, and I'm glad to see that Canon's addressing it. Hopefully this update will do the trick.

Hey, if it improves things, then I am all for it. I just shot a wedding this past Saturday and I did notice a little bit of a lag on some shots, but overall my cameras and 600EX-RTs did well. I had forgotten I had it in silent mode, which absolutely introduces lag (or more of it). I put it back to normal mode and I didn't miss a beat. But again, if they can improve it, that would be fantastic.

Decently would accurately describe it. :)

Are the slower to focus in low light issues I've read about only regarding shots with speedlight AF assist?

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but any time I've experienced the slow focus lag has been with a speedlite mounted. But by the same token, if it's dim enough to induce the slow focus issue, it's usually too dim to be shooting without a speedlite or some other kind of additional light anyway.

Thanks for the reply. For formal dances I have my 16-35 with speedlight on one camera for some safe shots, (external link) and I like to shoot some wide open prime shots (external link) with available light with the other camera. It's the latter that I'm concerned about.

wedding reception. i had a 5D3+35L+600ex and 5D2+24-70L+600ex, both on centre focus. 5D2 seems to focus faster in low light. 5D3 takes so long to lock-on.. even without firing flash, i tried..

I guess I'm just going to have to rent one for an actual wedding. Part of me thinks it can't be that bad or else it'd be all you hear about. The other part of me thinks it sounds pretty bad and I don't understand why you don't hear more about it.

Has anyone seen a 5D3 review by a shooter that uses a lot of primes/available light/wide open shooting?

I have been following this since it started at Canon and Canon Rumors forums. Posted a while ago but due to the surprising amount of low amount responses here, FM and and other sites it may have been dismissed as user error.

I don't doubt that some are having issues. It boggles the mind though. I mean, I do notice it drag every now and then but I had the same thing happen with other cameras and I don't notice anything glaringly bad with the 5D3.

I at times was shooting with the Sigma 35 wide open with no issues at all. Then again, during dance shots I am using AI Servo a lot so perhaps the problem is there but I just don't notice it since the the camera fires off shots regardless of focus acquisition.
