Since the 6d doesn't have an audio monitoring jack. What would you suggest as a work around?

I've got a boom mic, maybe I could route the audio through a "box" that has a monitor jack on it?

Any suggestions?

Are you wanting to record sound at the camera? If so, this monitoring box you speak of will really be your only option. Of course this isn't perfect as you won't be monitoring the sound at the record device, but only the sound as the mic, in this case a boom mic, is hearing it. It's that last link to the camera that is in doubt. But thats all part of recording to a DSLR. I would just do a lot of testing with your "box" and make sure that your are recording clean sound. A good solid connecting from the boom, through the box to your camera is very important here.

The other way to do this would be to use a handheld recorder like a Tascam DR-100 MkII and pass the sound through the recorder (of course record there too) to the camera. Thus giving you the headphone jack and the piece of mind that you have the sound recorded twice. The sound at the DR-100 MkII will be of a better quality (24bit as opposed to 16bit sound) and you can easily sync the two tracks in post and replace the camera sound with the recorder sound. It makes it a bit more cumbersome to deal with the extra bit of gear and having to press two record devices, but the end product will be better and you will have a solid headphone jack as well.

You could do this with a few of the other small, handheld recorders out there. I personally like the Tascam DR-100 as it is a very solid, robust and very clean device. It offers many more options than any of the other small recorders.

Two solutions are an external pre-amp with a headphone output or as already mentioned an external recorder.

Either way you will need to adapt the line level output of the pre-amp or recorder to the microphone level of the camera and that will require a matching attenuating cable or transformer.

This is a cable that contains a -25dB T-pad which will provide a decent match between the output of your pre-amp or recorder and the input of your camera.
