6D vs 5D3, can't make up my mind...

Not trying to be offensive... but why would you buy a $3000 mirror-less camera with a fixed lens before upgrading your DSLR... especially when you can get a 6D for slightly more than half the cost of the RX1 and a 5DIII for the same price. I'm just baffled by that...

I really don't mind carrying my camera+lenses with me when I'm on vacation, but I travel a lot for work and there are times when it's not convenient or safe having a huge and heavy dslr around my neck.

I had a canon p&s for those situations, but last year it stopped working and when looking for alternatives with good image quality I heard about the RX1 release, so I waited for the reviews and since it more than lived up to the expectations I bought it.

You're comparing apples and oranges here.. no one buys a fixed lens mirrorless as a replacement to a DSLR.. as I said, I already had a 60d and was happy with it. What I needed at the time was something compact.

Also, at no point I mentioned I was on a budget, so it isn't like buying the RX1 was going to prevent me from upgrading my DSLR.

As for the RX1, I've never regretted buying it. I love shooting at 35mm and this lens is probably one of the best 35mm ever.

^Fair enough. If it were me though, I'd use that same $3000 and just get a 6D with the Sigma 35/1.4

Really comes down to what lenses you currently own.

If you only have 1-3 with ef-s lens in the mix, I would just dump the whole lot and switch to Nikon D600.

I have considered the D600, but I have too many lenses and only one is EF-S (the 17-55). Also I like the handling of the Canons better in general.

I'm sure it's a great combo and the Sigma looks sharp, but unfortunately it would be a great combo I'd have to leave home in many situations.

Anyway, just ordered the 6d with the 24-105!

Nope, as guilty as it makes me feel I intend to use it in situations where my camera may get damaged... I have a lot of outdoor very active hobbies

I also plan on using it as a backup camera once I start doing semi-pro shoots for said hobbies

I love my 6D and have two T2is that intend to keep using for years. I hope to provide the 6D an able partner in crime with either the 70D if it has better AF and no swivel screen or the 7D2. For above water work the 6/7/70 bodies will be put to work. When in my really happy place underwater the T2is are fantastic. Down there DOF is key and a crop body makes all of the sense in the world. Above water a cropper and a FF are a perfect pair. I will keep the two T2is and maybe acquire a third along the way because their cost is mouse nuts compared to the UW housings.

For the kind of shots you mention you stop your lens down to f5.6 or less depending on the situation, pick one single point and aim at somewhere in the middle of your total dof to accommodate both fore and background.

That's how I always do it anyway...key is picking the right aperture.

As most lens are optimal at around f/8, that's usually the best aperture to pick if the light permits for such shots. I want to be shooting shots and not messing around with zone AF or spot points unnecessarily, unless there are clear benefits to doing so (yes sometimes it fails, and clicking the AF on button more than once to get the camera to focus on what you want can become more frustrating than going to zone AF). Hence I think there are situations where using all the AF points makes sense.
Anyway this is more relevant to the 7D and 5D3, as the 6D is far more dependent on the centre point and doesn't have especially wide coverage with the single axis only points.

The RX1 has been reviewed as one of the best IQ FF cameras out there. If you primarily use a 35mm lens then its a great camera to have

Wow, I'm suprised at the difference in those viewfinders. That really does show the 6D as a single point AF camera only and people should be aware of how that can limit your photography before you press the buy button.........

But in this case the cameras would probably perform similarly. And would tend to grab focus on the high contrast window on the left. Only the D600 can't place a focus point over it. However the outer points on the 6D are pretty slow to grab focus.

I don't quite get what you are trying to say.

From the looks of the active point shown in the photos, maybe the author was probably trying to focus on the lady rather than the window?

All 3 clearly cannot accommodate her in the picture, but I guess it's just an example to show the AF points spread on different cameras.

With all AF points enabled, then yes I agree it would probably have focused on the window, if only that's what you are trying to do....and exactly why I think all AF points enabled is always a bad idea

Its the easiest spot for the AF system to grab focus, and its the same distance from the camera as the lady. So I really don't see a problem with doing this at typical daytime aperture settings like f/8.
