Panning is a technique I want to work on this summer and I've been thinking about one particular issue of panning.

What is the slowest speed you could achieve an acceptable panning shot of a subject? I don't mean shutter speed but the subject speed.

Examples of slow moving subjects would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
Simon.

Probably depends on the photographer and how steady and smooth his technique. You're panning in order to show motion, it's generally reserved for a subject moving moderately fast. Long distance runners are probably the slowest moving subjects I pan with personally. But theoretically, you could pan with a baby crawling across the floor. Handheld it may be difficult, but if you used a tripod, it should be quite easy.

Here is the slowest object I panned:

This last one is interesting. It was the editors fav:

I'm told they max out at around 30, so guess they were around 20 where I was setup at.

Thanks, very interesting. Never thought about being able to achieve panning on a baby crawling. Everything being dependent on the skill of the photographer, that has got me thinking.

I shoot a lot of local rugby and football and thought about about taking a second camera and have it set up for panning when a winger gets the ball, I'd have to be very quick and extremely lucky but might well be worth a try.

Again thanks, love the examples. :D

WOW! They're brill. Can you offer me any tips, techniques or pointers to shoot anything half as good as these?

I guess the main thing is to try and keep the subject in the centre of your frame.
With the longer glass (200mm+) i try to use a shutter speed around 1/25, shorter glass it's possible to go lower.
Another technique i've read is to use one shot instead of burst mode.
There are much better examples than mine for how awesome panning can work for sports, i don't have any links saved, but i will try and find some.

Much appreciated thanks.

I use a 70-200 for rugby. The problem I have currently is light, or lack of it.

I shoot local rugby and they don't have floodlights, kick off is pulled forward to 14.30 to help but it really is a struggle. On Saturday I was on ISO 6400, 4.5 and 1/500th second by half time. It was a grey overcast cold English winters afternoon.
