Letting your cursor hover over the title usually gives you more information on what a thread is about.

The overall impression I got, except for the photos of construction projects and a few others, was one of poverty and constriction. Likely, subjects were selected with showing "how the other half lives" in mind; or could it be that more than half lived that way at the time? What was the prevailing national mood? In the early '40s, a devastating war was going on, with many casualties. War industries were pulling the U.S. out of the Depression, but essential goods were rationed.

Apparently, it wasn't the custom then for people to smile when their picture was taken.

In contrast to the current scene, hardly anyone was overweight.

Not so sure about the 'good old days', in #20 its about 50/50 with or without shoes for the kids getting a class picture taken.
