Hi all! I've been lurking for about a month now, and decided to post my fav. pics taken with my brand new Rebel XT. I'm so excited about learning more about photography! I know nothing about the manual settings on this camera (I only had a Sony P&S till now) but I'm reading alot trying to understand everything. So tell me what you think... this is my main subject - my little girl, Alexis.

Thanks,
Casie

I like them both, but the first one is a little dark. Do you have the 18-55mm lens? Do you have a speedlite?

No. 2 is superb!

My 2 cents: take lots of pictures starting on Aperature priority and shutter priority mode- when setting either Av or Tv, pay attention to what the camera is automatically setting the corresponding shutter speed or apperature and ask yourself "why is it doing that".

For example: you want a shallow depth of field (daughter in focus but not the background), so you go to aperature priority mode (Av) and set the apurature really small to 2.0 Now your outside in the bright sun and the camera automatically sets the shutter speed to 1/2000. Why? When you can answer and pre-estimate what the shutter speed will be you'll be on the right track.

I took way too many pictures not knowing what the heck was going on when I started (not that there's anything wrong with that). For me, that's the best part about digital- seeing the results in real time.

Welcome!!

Thank you so much! Yes I do have the 18-55 lens, and I do have a flash but I don't know how to use it. It came with a package deal I got; Bower SFDS its very lightweight and I haven't used it yet.

My next problem is time. Both my husband and I work for the phone company down here in Louisiana and we are still working hurricane damage; 10hr days, 13 days on with 1 off. So the only time I have is when it's dark or my one day off. Maybe I should bring my camera to work and take pics of my coworkers for practice! But I will take your advice and play in the av mode, I might start a little notebook with my results. My next move I think is a 50mm lens, a backpack, and some Bryan Peterson books (I've seen his book mentioned several times) and of course getting ya'lls advice!

Thanks,
Casie

Maybe you should. Oh and welcome. Now run away or your going to get the photography bug. It's contagious here. I warned you.

I love seeing pictures that beginners take. Especially before they get a good grasp on photoshop, or even the camera. It's amazing what some people push the shutter button at.

I'm so picky. if something is obstructing the view, I usually avoid pushing that button, but number 2 is great.
