I'm thinking of buying it today.. i'm very close.
But i would still like to hear opinions from other crop users with the 17-40 L.

I'm planning on using as an all-round lense, this includes portraits, landscape, in-door, close-ups etc. Basically anything you can photograph.

I'm worried about the sharpness, the f/4 and if it will do as portraits.

Both Canon or Sigma 17-50/55 has faster aperture, longer range and IS to boost. Look into those.

17-40 has no place on crop.

Get one of the 17-50's instead. Same or better IQ, 1 stop faster, stabilizer.

I think this makes a good walk round lens and not bad for portraits if your not up close.
This is a shot taken at 17mm on the 7D ( slight crop ) not mega wide but still fits a lot in when up close......

Looks great, do you have more samples? Maybe some portraits? Is it hard to get OOF/Bokeh with f/4 and portraits?

I tend to use my 50mm for portraits, use the 17-40 for general use, bokeh really depends on the distance of the background from the subject I think with most lenses.
This one from a walk with the dog was f/8 ISO 800 @ 27mm, I hope this may help in some way, maybe you could rent before you buy or someone else can post a few portraits...

Unfortunally we don't have a firm that we can rent lenses from in my town, i been to a store and tested it on my 60D, dident see any problems and i really liked the crop factor on it. Tried different shots in the store and all seemed sharp and with no problems on f/4.

Appreciate more shots on various objects/scenes

I have it on my 7D (and before that the 400D) and like it very much for a walk around/landscape lens, I got it really cheap through an asian guy at work so that was also a big reason for me to get it, but I think I would definitely consider it if I would have to buy it new.

Mine is used, but i get warranty from the store and it looks to be in very good condition. It's 35% of the price of a new one.

If you can get it that cheap, by all means buy it ;)

I have one on ff and I only use it for landscape, as that's what it is designed for.

+1

If you can really get a good copy for 35% of the normal asking price, I'll jump on it.

In fact i will jump on ANY lens selling for 35%, sell them and make profits :p
