I have a relatively new 5d3, so far it's performed perfectly.
Yesterday I had an opportunity to shoot for an hour or so at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

I had the 5D3 attached to my 500 f4. I was shooting in AV mode, nice bright day. I noticed that the exposure level indicator was not visible that instead all way to the right of the scale was a small arrow pointing to the right.

When I went to manual mode the indicator came back into view and I was able to shoot manually. However, in AV or TV mode the indicator was gone.
I took out the battery, changed lenses, it never changed. Finally I cleared all the camera settings and restarted and it was back to normal.

In the AV and TV mode I was able to see the indicator again and it responded to the exposure compensation dial.

I am hoping that rather than poring over the 401 pages of the manual, that someone can tell me what in the world I did to make that happen.

I really appreciate anyone's help in advance.

thanks much

GG

that is weird.... I've only saw that arrow in the meter in manual mode... usually when I switch over from av or TV and my previous manual settings were either way over exposed or underexposed....

Only thing I can think of is if you were set to f4 and your ISO was set high and your camera maxed out the shutter speed over 1/8000....

Okay, to save you from "poring [Sic]over the 401 pages of the manual", go to page 169. Sounds like you set your exposure compensation beyond +-3 stops:

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.
